New Jeep on the Streets

Just picked up a 92 YJ a couple weeks back, not sure exactly what all the bells and whistles are about but it's pretty tall so I shouldn't hit any rocks with it. Also notice that the KM2s don't have any grooves, are they a special run or something?



The shifters, can anyone help me out with what all of these do?

That looks like a pretty cool jeep!
Im not sure about the tires, maybe they are worn down past the depth of the grooves? I'd maybe look into having them siped extra deep, should make up for it.
Does the factory instruction manual say anything about the gear levers? maybe it's a higher-end option like the Lara Croft editions, I have a friend with one of those and they come with a whole lot more offroad options!

Looks like he has an atlas in it thats what the twin sticks are for. One lever controls the front axle the other the rear axle. Each leaver has a High, Neutral, and Low setting. You can put the front in LOW and the rear in Neutral for a front dig. Or if you snap your rear shaft you can do Front High rear Neutral for FWD. Or Front in N and rear in L for a 2WD low option very nice when you want to do a tight turn but still want to crawl. The upper one looks to be for the front OX locker. Tires look good lots of tread life the dont look like KM2 more like BFG Krawlers. Looks like a pretty sweet set up.

One other note even tho you are tall you will hit rocks with it. I sit 7.5 lift with 37's and my belly pan is caved in along with my oil pan.

Actually, I think he said something about the front end locker? being controlled by another knob next to the gear shift, I wasn't really paying attention since I was so caught up in the moment. What would the front lever be for if it wasn't for the front end locker?

I swear he said they were KM2 tires, how good are these Krawlers you speak of?

If I'm still going to hit rocks, maybe I need to lift it some more. I don't want any dents or scratches on the body or frame.

Look on the side of the tire. The Krawlers are awesome rock tires but are soft so tread life is short. If that isnt the front locker then the PO put a 4speed atlas in it, and the lever is for different low range gear. But im pretty sure its the locker. I wouldnt lift it any more its already looks too tall and will be come very tippy if you offroading. Like i said mine is about your hight maybe little taller and its already tippy feeling offroad. If you dont want any dents or scratches then just keep it as a pavement princess cause if you go on the rocks you will get dinged up.

The lever above the transfer case shifters, I think is either for controlling the front vacuum actuator mechanism (to engage the front diff) or for a OX locker. I'd tunnel underneath and follow the cable to where it goes...

My advice, What you have there for lift should be plenty, as long as the tires don't rub under flex too bad. I would keep your center of gravity as low as possible while still running the tires you already have. Too much lift can really work against you in many situations...
Tag along on a run sometime and see how you like it first, And a better opinion from others there seeing that bad boy can help as well.

Alright guys, I gotta come clean. Just havin a little fun, this thing is pretty dang sweet! It's got the 2.5, AX5, 2.7 Klune V, 4.3 Atlas, Dynatrac 60 rear, fully polished 30 with WARN shafts and hub conversion, 35" Krawlers on Champion beadlocks. Here's a couple quick videos of it from the 4th...





Currently I'm working a deal to ditch the 30 but I gotta wait and see what develops from that...

So that makes sense if the lever next to the shifter is for the Klune V doubler. The two sticks are for the Atlas only. Basically you have the components for the 4 speed Atlas, I believe they went ahead and machined a doubler into the transfer case as one unit vs. your two separate units you had to mate together. Either way, should make for some really slow and low gear ratios. I don't know how long the Klune is, but with the Dana 60, the Atlas, and the Klune, your rear driveshaft probably is just a short piece of Schedule 40 pipe bridging the rear axle to transfer case. Maybe you, Banks 316, and a herd of turtles can drag race for slowest crawler next time you guys are at TSF. I think he runs at Stak 3-speed instead of an Atlas. I'd go easy with those front digs with the Dana 30. Gear ratios like that and you could go through U-joints faster than you would like, but it looks like you are going to swap that out.
As far as the tires go, I don't think the BF Krawlers or KM2's come with any siping or grooves at all. You can have them put on by any quality tire shop for better all season driving/handling. As a trail tire though, they are the bomb! Airing down with those makes em' pretty chubby and the sidewall is pliable enough to make it work well rather than some of the stiffer tires out there.
Neat little rig, I am sure you will see some of us out on the trails in the near or distant future.
