Summer Trip Planned

So it was a toss between Moab and the OBDR....OBDR won out.

Anyone have experience on the OBDR? I really wanted Moab, but we're planned for late July (hot) and don't feel like 2 days on the highway in Wranglers.

Any tips/advice/etc welcomed.

Yeah sorry...I thought everyone knew about it! It is a series of jeep trails and fire roads that connect the Northern border of Cali to Washington. Apparently, it is most wilderness - river crossings, mountains, etc. Looking to unplug with friends, do some camping/photography, and spend some quality time with the Jeep.

DrHolliday is new to Oregon :-) And only avid off roaders, overlanders, hunters and woods men know about them LOL We had never head of them until we started off roading and researching places to go

We have talked about doing it but so far have not found the time.

Ressurecting an old thread here, but did you ever do any of the OBDR?

I'm looking at 2013 vacation schedules and would love to do a Jeep multi-day camping trip on one or more of the trails in the late spring or summer.

I would be most likely a yes on this, It's on my to do list for sure!
A friend of mine owns a Bronco, we were going to do this last year.
He planned it out pretty well last year.
He would always be up to what and how anyone else would like to do this route.
He is not a pushy person at all, He just enjoys the outdoors and getting out like most of us here. :-)
Last year, unfortunately I just ran out of time to make this trip happen. My rig is ready.
Would you be in favor of letting this be an open run to allow other vehicles to join us?
If not that's ok. I understand being at times a Wrangler "only" event.
Maybe knowing this answer might help in the pre planning stages as well.

We never made it, instead we went to Manastash Ridge in WA. I heard there really isn't any "jeeping" but forest roads and such..but I would still be down.

Based on as much info as I can find, i'm guessing that you are correct about the lack of "jeeping". The only narratives about the trail are from "adventure motorcyclist" trips and they don't comment about any real challenges.

But it might be a nice low stress couple day trip away from the city.

The wife and I drove the OBCDR last summer. We travelled the section from the Washington border to Highway 20. This is roughly the northern 2/3 of Route 5.

We spent a total of 10 days on the trail, including the time to and from home in Beaverton. Total mileage from home and back was 1250. Check the maps from OOHVA. You will see a multitude of historic points and manned fire lookouts, etc., along the route. We made it a point to hit all of these. We also tried to set up camp well before dark, do a little fishing and relaxing and not push it. If you just stick to the main route and drive hard you could make it much faster but would miss the real reason for driving these roads.

This trail is not a 4X4 challenge. You might use four wheel drive for 1% of the trip. It was originally laid out to follow existing USFS and BLM roads but an effort was made to follow the more remote and lesser used roads and avoid the major all-weather gravel roads. Some of the roads have been decommissioned and you will need to make a few minor detours. There are NO OBCDR sign posts for the trail. They were removed as the result of a law suit by some environmental groups.

Besides the OOHVA maps you can buy a CD with track logs from Oregon Back Country Discovery Route . Be prepared for some route finding with good maps, a GPS and any other resources you can get your hands on.

Depending on the time of year (we went during late August) be prepared for snow, high water at the fords, and the chance of trees down across the road. Some of these roads receive little or no maintenance. Each year there are some trees that come down. Depending on how many users have travelled the road before you, you may be forced to do some clearing work. We made heavy us of the chain saw on some of the side trips we took.

Plan for fuel. We left the trail frequently to get fuel at small towns or wayside stations.

You can watch an OPB program about the trail at Oregon Field Guide — Back Country Discovery Route · Oregon Public Broadcasting . It might give you some idea why you would want to run the trail.

I've done parts of it, I have the gps routes from Grants Pass to Mt hood and back, staying in the cascades, up the east side back down the west. We did it in 8 days on KLR 650's. The same route could easily be done in a jeep. Someday,,,,,I will in mine.

How is the route near Mt Hood? Would be cool to even do a weekend trip (I live in Rhododendron)

New Jeep owner here but would LOVE to do this one!!! Snow and all would be cool but might be harder to do. Starting to get Jeep ready for expeditions but am wondering if this would be a more on my own time or if there'd be some interest from other peeps to have some company...

I would also like to do a stretch of the OBCDR. I'm interested in spending about five or six days. Route 3 going through southern Oregon Cascades looks appealing. Might not be able to do the entire 430+ miles but could do a good part of that. I'm open to other routes too. Just really want to get off the beaten path for a few days.

I would be interested in this route. I worked building a powerline in the southern area of route 5. It is really some nice country.
