There was about a foot. The snow on the roads and trails had been drove down by people during the day. Fb5 was pretty slick.

Tire Chains – Cables – Traction Devices for winter driving.

It is better to carry them and not need them or worst you need them and do not have them.

The few times I have used tire chains or cables was not for accelerating it was for braking and steering traction going down steep hills on very slick surfaces usually at the end of the day. Or I needed the traction for winching or pulling someone out of a ditch, again usually on a steep hill that is very slick or icy. If you travel in “snow zones” or go to “sno-parks” they are usually require that you carry them. It is a good idea to have them when the State Patrol “REQUIRES” you to put them on if when traveling over any passes. If you have them carry them. If you thing you might need them, carry them.

Damn, my chains are heavy - both in weight and duty. I have the CAM style chain set and only a pair.

On the road when traction devices are required even on 4wd vehicles - I mount my chains on my rear tires. When I off road and if I should need them, I would mount them on my front wheels.

Where does everyone mount their chains?

I have 2 sets, if I ever do find the need to chain up they will be on all 4 corners.

Ahh, my pockets weren't deep enough for 2 pairs . Quite honestly, I have them just in case but never had the need to use them while on a group snow run.

Ken I have always had 2 pair for any 4x4 we owned, I figured IF I ever needed them I wanted to be able to do it right. I drive often with out dave, and he wants me to be able to get out of what ever by my self. With that being said knock on wood, I have NEVER had need for chains.

Which tires I mount my tire chains on depends on what I’m trying to accomplish. A vehicle needs traction for 4 things: lateral stability, acceleration, steering and braking.

I should pick up some chains. Any idea where I should pick up some chains for a 37x12.50x17?

I sent a web link that might help you decide what type of traction device that would work for your driving needs. Then go to one of your local tire shop or store and pick them up.

I know we have a lot of new people that have not been around very long I just wanted to remind the old guys and just put it out there for the new guys. We at Wrangler forum SW Washington and NW Oregon are about promoting Tread Lightly. If you are not sure what that is please take time to look over the information at this site Tread Lightly - Home . The more we teach about Tread Lightly the more responsible drives there will be out there, and the more trails that will stay open.

Post My personal Off Road Tire Chains..

I don't have a pair currently now but will next year...
I worked for a company almost 25 yrs ago that sold truck tire chains and by far the commercial light trucks that wanted chains always went for the v-bar designed tire chains
and for good reason in deep snow and ice.
Fyi, these chains are designed for off road deep snow or ice use..
DISCLAIMER/WARNING...
Do not buy v-bar style chains if you plan on running them more on the street because there ride is much rougher then most people would put up with, and they will wear out much faster on the streets.
IF you own a JK which has traction control and ABS too.. I would ask about using these and if they have sold or installed them on JK's.. Just thinking the electronics might see those chains as a problem and not a benefit.

Previously for me when I have had to put chains on, I wanted the best of plowing but also lateral traction as well. So if I had to use them on the roads, my speeds never exceed 30mph..
Also these chains are "not" designed for constant highway use unless you are "truly" on a lot of snow or severe ice..

I use to call my chains my studded tires on steroids.. And I was really glad when I could take them off..lol
Good Luck in what works for you... And yes I had two pairs as well.

TSF Browns Camp run 12/3/11

Chris-Banks316 and I are planning to go to TSF this Saturday morning.

Meeting at the shell station off Hwy 6 @ 8:15 am. take off for TSF by 8:45. We'll get the the Browns Camp Staging area to air down and prepare for the run.

Not sure if there is much snow up there still but its probably pretty muddy.

Anyone is welcome to Join us. We will be doing more of the Black diamond (harder) trails. I did make it up these trails with my stock Rubi but I was on the skid plates/ rock rails and dinged them up some. There are bypass trails around the hard sections, but some people may not want to ding up their stock rigs.

Both Chris and I have CB's and we'll be using channel 22.

I don't have a quit time in mind, but I plan to be home before dark unless something happens like a broken rig or some one gets really stuck.

According to the website the only thing closed is University Firepower.

We were there Saturday. UF is about the only thing closed. We ran Cedar Tree and Powerline. Fire Break 5 was open on the lower side. We did not try it, we kept it tame this time.

Yup, University Firepower is typically closed during the winter.

I can't believe it! I figured you would have at least run the first part, since the wife got to do it last time.

There were two lifted rigs and 3 stock. So we kept it a little more civil this trip. We still had a few places with excitement, even on Powerline.

Thanks for showing us the trails and helping with that last big rock down hill we did. It was a lot of fun testing my stocker. I think it did pretty well even though the hitch was trying to hang me up all day.
