Just moved up from GA to Johnson City. I heard about the fire tower. Where is it? I heard it is a nice hike for the family.

New to Johnson City, most if not all trails listed on here are closed off. Anyone know of trails that are still open? Mostly stock 06 X

There doesnt seem to be much around this area, surprisingly. You would think that an area like this has dirt roads and jeep trails all over the place, but nope. I have a stock 14 JKU, and I've only found a few places just to get into the woods.

You can go up past Blue Hole, there is a few side roads that I haven't checked out due to usually being by myself and having pretty crappy tires. There's the road that goes up to the Pinnacle fire tower, but there is absolutely nothing up there off of the gravel. There are what looks like ATV trails near the gravel road at some points, but from what I've seen they are too narrow for trucks. There's also the road that goes up to the Beauty Spot outside of Erwin...I don't think there's anything up there either besides the views.

There are a couple of places that people talk about: Bumpus Cove (which from what I've gathered is not the best place to take a stock Jeep), Stoney Creek, and Bays Mtn. I haven't been to any of these places. The Jeep club here seems to go to Bays a lot, probably just out of convenience. The pictures I've seen make it look kind of gnarly, and I've heard that 1) the trail is really short and 2) something about the Bays Mtn people really not liking the 4x4 traffic.

To be honest, I've been trying to even figure out where these places are, and I've seen many other people ask for specific directions, but never get them. Not sure why people are so tight-lipped about it.

Nice. Sounds like someone else's baby though. At least it went to a good home. How much?

Did some trading on it and it needs quite a bit finished up and general maint as well before it'll be ready but gives me something to do this winter and now I don't have to mess up my other wrangler w/ lift and taking offroad as it's very clean for older tj.

Good project for the winter. Is your daughter going to help wrench on it? I've had my boy working with me on my truck since he was about 3. My daughter helps a little but she mostly just wants to watch dad. Enjoy.

The other nice thing about this is that you get to keep your TJ in good condition and ready to hand over to the little one once she turns 16. Around that time you will be due for a new 2025 model year. That's how I did it with my wife in convincing her I needed a new Jeep now. An investment for the future. 10 years from now I can hopefully hand this over to my son. That will leave the minivan for the daughter in 12 years. I wonder if I am setting myself up for a sibling fight over this?

Lol sounds that way. She had claimed the white one as soon as I pulled off trailer but we agreed she can have my daily tj long as I paint it pink first for her lol.

And by that time a jk should be had for reasonable as I am curious to get one for a daily just due to comfort and I do like the looks but I'd never part with my tj's. I just can't justify 30k for a new jeep when I have my daughter to take care of.

Bumpus is a great place for stock jeeps, and the beauty spot is where I go when it snows also there is a good place in lime stone cove called Dixie creek that's a lot of fun, it's right at the indian creek camp grounds. There is a lot of trails around here you just have to know where to look.

Directions to Beauty Spot:
Take Interstate 26 to Exit 36 (Erwin). Turn toward Erwin at end of exit on Harris Hollow Rd. At stop light turn RIGHT on N. Main Ave. Turn RIGHT at stop light onto Highway 395 (Rock Creek Rd.). Take Rock Creek Rd. to North Carolina State Line. Turn LEFT on gravel road (there is a small parking area where you turn onto the gravel road). Stay on gravel road for 2 miles until road forks. Stay RIGHT and arrive at Beauty Spot.

Now hopefully someone can share directions to Bumpus.

You don't turn right at the fork, that's just the first view you keep going for another 5 or 6 miles

Bumpus cove is a road off of the river road you can find it with a GPS. It would be a lot easier then me trying to explain it the redneck way lol

Ok, I thought beauty spot was the first turn off and the second one was named something else. Either way. I went to the ranger station in Unicoi to pick up a map and they said that the rangers were out closing gates...not sure how many they could find to close since most of them are closed all the time anyway!

So do I look for a road called Bumpus cove? I guess ill do some google earthing in that area.

Apparently yesterday was the day that the Forest Service, in their infinite and glorious wisdom opened some of the seasonal gates back up. There are several that they are deeming too storm-damaged (or whatever) to open to the public.

http://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_...rdb5434566.pdf

I don't know what their name for the Bumpus Cove trail is, so I don't know if it is open or not. For the past several months the only places to go have been out by Holston Mtn or past Blue Hole. Yawn.

Longhorn, I can't help you with Bays Mtn. I still haven't been up there, and the guys in the Tri-Cities Jeep Club haven't been going up there at all, I think a pretty good part of the trail is illegal.

No problem. A forest service map is always a great thing to have too. You can buy them at the ranger station in Erwin.

DiabeticHero- JC resident also here. I've seen your rig around town. Not many of the Commando Greens around here. I've seen yours, another JKU Sport, and then mine.
