491 South - Northern Kentucky

took a drive today to look for the off road park - suprised to actually find it and its not that far away - 20-25 minutes from the Florence area.

stopped in and talked to Ted, nice old fella that owns the land and cut the trails..

got to talkin with him to get an idea of what i would be in store for.. (never been off road really - first time for me and my Jeep)
any ways he tells me about the trails and creeks and some of the hills are or can be a little hard to wheel on (like in a scale of 1-5, some are about a 4) so he shows me a map, and tells me i can go down the hill and check the place out FOR FREE!! and if i wanted to stay and play for awhile just to come back up to the shop and then i could pay... oh yeah..

so i go down the big hill (all you can see from the shop is trees and trees)
so im a crusin down the hill (rocky) and im already gettin nervous.. not sure if im ready, not sure if my Jeep can handle it, not sure if my inexperience is going to get my A$$ upside down or not..

so running down the hill in first gear locked in 4H and its not bad.. a little bumpy.. i crossed a nice little creek, some good mud holes, some nice size ditches then at the bottom it opens up into a nice flat, with ramps for the quads and dirt bikes (one actually) and its right by a creek crossing
also at the flat is a nice little mud hole thats about 45 -50 long for rigs to run thru, if they dare..

i get down there and theres a guy with a toyota truck stuck and stalled int the mud.. so i get out and help to get him out, a guy in a stock dodge diesel ram was down there as well (suprised he got that big beast down there)

anyways.. the dodge gets him out and i head back up to the shack to express my excitement to Ted and thank him for letting me come down and check out a portion of the trails..
he did advise me before i left the shack (at my request to steer me clear of something im not ready for.. ya know like a steep hill with to many obstacles..) so he showed me on the map how to go down.. and come back the same way.. well go figure.. i got turned around on the way out and went up a hill i wasnt ready for.. very steep, trees on either side of the jeep that just clear my fenders.. i get to the first set of trees and OH SHIT.. im on the wrong trail.. now im down right scared (ok so im a wuss) never done this before, not sure what to do.. so i stop just in front of 2 small trees the i can just fit between before making a almost 90 degree left turn thru 2 more trees that will just fit thru.. so i start to back down the hill just a bit.. and realize.. this just aint going to work..if i trie to back down something bad is gong to happen..

so i put my faith in my jeep and went forward.. and got thru without a problem at all.. i was very suprised.. went thru between the trees like a champ (they were extremely close to taken out the flares.) so i get up to the top of the hill and find a place to turn around and then come down the same hill with the trees.. man it was fun ... freakin awesome.. i get down to the bottom of the hill and find where i made a wrong turn.. go up the creek bed, do some minor rock crawling and up the big hill back to the shack.. get out of my mud covered rig and with a huge smile on my face walk thru the door to meet up with Ted.. and thank him for letting me play on his playground for free.. (was only there for about 35-45 minutes most of which was spent out of my rig and helping get the other guy unstuck..

anyways.. 491 south seems to be a pretty sweet place.. i did get a pic of the stuck guys truck with my phone.. didnt get any of me or my rig.. was all by myself.. (probably why i was sweating the big hills and trees)

planning on going in 2 weeks on Saturday the 12th. got a few buds going this time to watch my back.. so anyone in the aread of florence or dry ridge that wants to go and play.. on a real offroad place without getting shot at or arrested for tespassing.. let me know..

$15 a person (not per ride - so passengars pay as well)
but its worth it.. Ted says hes usually there on saturdays at 9am and 15 bucks to play in the sandbox all day is a good deal if ya ask me.. especially since there isnt anywhere else to wheel.. (least for us that dont have friends that own farms)

so lets go yall

sorry so long i wanted to share my first time with ya.. LOL

yeah it was pretty cool, i was expecting it to be a little easier due to when i went down last time and he let me ckeck it out for free, but i didnt really go thru any of the trails, some of them are pretty narrow, and some of the hills coming out of the creek bed are damn steep, there was a few places i did turn around because i didnt feel safe attempting them, but id say now that i have seen some of the trails, they rate (on scale 1-5) as most being a 2-3, and a couple good 4-5's in difficulty. for me being a newb at this, (first time i REALLY went offroad and into the soup) i was pretty comfortable with most of the trails. in some spots where you could go thru an obstacle or go around (so you didnt have to do the obstacle) it was hard to get past, one of them i couldnt go around because i just couldnt get any bite on the tires in the clay, i tried one about 6 times backing up and turning more left but when i got close to the mudhole (obstacle) i would just slide into it, so i had to really jam thru a few to get out.. if i had MT instead of AT tires, i probably wouldnt have had any difficulties with some of the mud holes.. but man we had a blast, worth the $15 bucks.. you guys should come with next time.. im hoping to go in 2 weeks around the 26th or 27th. I'll be sure to get you a better notice this time.

hope you guys can make it.. let me know if these dates work for you guys.

Looks like a blast! Might be able to make the haul over from Louisville on the 26th, but definitely not on the 27th. If you decide on a day post it up and I will begin motivating myself for the drive.

Welcome, i drive down to maysville every other weekend, its a good drive up if you want to go wheeling.. it would be about 1.5 hour drive up nearly.. maybe more depending on what part you live in..

stock suspension might be pushing it.. some of the mud holes get pretty deep, one of our friends drove her 2007 4 door, all stock suspension and she did pretty good, got stuck once but was able to get out with a little effort.. you should be ok on the hills and creek we went thru. and if you get stuck someone is there to get you out so no biggie really.. another one of our Rigs got stuck but he was going in the most deep holes you could find.. he's got a 2 inch spacer lift but did ok otherwise on the hills and stuff..

491 is located off of 75 at xit 166. turn east off exit, and go to Route 25. Turn RIGHT and
follow until you get to 491 which is on the left hand side, across from grant county fairgrounds, then follow 491 about 6 miles and its on the left. pretty easy to find.

vids

short vids on wheeling at 491 South.

the one of me getting stuck is messed up a bit, due to my friend forgot to shut off the camera and kept recording, the sky, the ground, his feet..etc.. (sorry dont have any editing software to shorten)

i got cocky and tried to go out sideways but the hole sucked me in, i was able to get out myself by rocking a bit.

bro its really up to How big is your wallet? LOL

to start out you can do a space lift kit, which is what my buddy in the video above uses, they are pretty inexpensive and easy to install, and there is NO need to modify anything or cut or weld..

i bought a 2.5 inch lift kit from Rough Country, it comes as a complete kit with springs, shocks and spacers to lower the skid plate. all for $299.00
the install looks pretty easy if you have the correct tools and garage, i didnt install mine due to not having tools or anywhere to install it.. probably would have taken me a few days to do.. LOL

there are also Budget Boost kits, and those are decent and cheap as well.. so it really depends on how much coin you want to spend..

there is a lift kit review section off of the main page.. check it out and youll see likes and dislikes as well as pics of some nice rigs and how the kit looks on them..

one thing i would seriously consider is this.. i went with a 2.5 inch.. and NOW, i wish i would have waited and did a 4 instead.. so if your thinking about a 2 or bigger.. seriously consider just starting with a 4 inch right off the bat.. my kits looks and rides pretty decent but i wish it was higher.. (basically for me i like the look of a higher rig) clearance is better as well but i havent had any issues with mine.. just needs to be BIGGER.....

hope this helps bro.

thanks man, i really dont want to go extreme, but i would like to go up to a 31 inch tire for now... i would think the 2.5 would probbably do me pretty good, i just got back from driving it in the feild and its making a horible noise in the front and i cant pin point it, i can jump up and down on it and i cant get it to do a thing but just as soon as i hit a bump in the feild there it is... I dont know what it could be... but just as soon as i get the bugs out of it, im gonna try some good trails...
thanks again for the help!

For those reading this with limited off road experience, and a stock jeep let me give some insight/advise. Your stock jeep will go more places that you most likely think it can. Now that does not mean you should try the hardest trail out there, but TJ's YJ, XJ ZJ JK LJ CJ etc... do darn well in stock form.

For the past few years my vacations where spent as a trail guide that took the stock jeep group on trails in Tellico, now closed, The stockers went on the same trails as harder groups, less one or two areas. Yes it took more work and time to get them over the trail in some cases, but they did it. Also you are less likely to bust something in a stock jeep.

491 looks like a neat place to visit for a lot of us. Not sure when I will get down there, but at some point I will.
