Do you have number for this guy? A quick google didn't find him.

I want to get a new front bumper with a winch since I tend to be out by myself at times and self recovery is my only option at that point should I do something stupid.

I was looking at the Smittybilt XRC but reading on another forum that is might be China built and that bothers me a bit even though I know much of the steel used on "Made in USA" stuff is also chinese steel, I have been to China and inspected some manufacturing facilities and don't like participating in their practices if possible.

So, a local fabbed bumper, if not stupidly priced would be a preferable alternative.

Oh, and is this little subgroup going to end up being called WFBG or BWF. I only ask that as the off topic group where I used to hang became known, after a short time as BWOT [BenzWorld OffTopic].

Closest places I can find seem to be in Oak Ridge TN [Windrock] or one of the 4WD stores in Nashville or Indy. I don't know what they actually have in stock and I am not interested in "here is what we have in our catalog" since I can do online shopping as well as anyone [AmEx seems to think better than many].

Solutions to actually touch/feel what I want to buy in the area?
There's not a lot of stuff in the store at the moment for Jeeps. There's going to be quite a few Jeep vendors from what I understand at a show that is sponsored by Trailblazers in early January. Presently, the store is more geared towards truck accessories, which is unfortunate for us Jeep guys... but that's what pays the bills for the storefront because it's much bigger market around here. For the record, the head of the company is a fellow Jeep guy.

I've heard good things about the Hobbie Shoppe. There's also Bent Fabrications in Georgetown that does some serious rigs for KotH type stuff and I know personally they do good work for custom stuff. Problem is with any custom shop, you're still in that position of not touching what you're buying. You're buying an idea.

I can't think of any place within a couple hundred miles of Lexington that has a showroom that caters exclusively to the Jeep crowd or even has a decent selection. Trailblazers is limited, but the best within driving range for off the shelf products. You're more than welcome to come down to the warehouse location where the main offices are located to shoot the breeze or get some product recommendations sometime though.

benaldridgejr you work at S&S? If so, do you know anyone at the Versailles store? If so, we may have a friend in common that is a fellow wheeler.

Yes i work at the Hamburg S&S Tire! Unfortunaltly i dont know anyone at Versailles. Most S&S tires were franchise owned untill just about a month ago, corporate just bought and took over alot of them. But all jeepers are fellow wheelers at heart!!

Ted, who is the manager over at the Versailles store, has an old CJ5 and he's interesting to watch out on the trails, lol. He's a member of our club (Twisted Off Road Club).

Everyone should come out for a ride with us sometime if you're not already with a club.... or even if you are, the more the merrier.

Chris, I understand the marketing for the biggest target. It makes very good biz sense, and is the best way to front a very good warehouse operation but not so good for touch/feel on items that are not the mainstream interests.

I have been very surprised that Lexington doesn't have a Jeeps only store or a Jeeps only dealer. With Harlan, Lake Cumberland, Big South Fork and Red River all about 150 miles away it seems we are a center for much activity. I would think an active dealer who does sales, fab and expeditions would flourish.

I'm with ya! There was a time when I had to drive quite a ways just to get a relatively simple part. You hit the nail on the head though with the "not so good for touch/feel on items that are not the mainstream interests". As popular as Jeeps are in this area and with as many opportunities to wheel as there are, we are still *very* much in the minority. I know of fab places in KY that do very well and are always busy, but I'm guessing they would go into massive debt and/or under if they had to stock a showroom. There's definitely business in our area, I just don't if it would be enough to be sustainable, ya know? There's been several that have tried in Lex over the years that have come and gone.

Yes, I should be. But it's my birfday, and I'll be damned if I have to ride the buggy on my birfday. So I took off.

Where is this at and what is it like? Not going to be out playing in the Jeep this weekend because of the UK football and basketball games, plus have a club officer's meeting. I've never heard of Jiggwater though.

Happy birthday!

That's correct. I have a guy in our club that just did an 2.5 to 4.0 engine swap, so he probably still has his AX-5 laying around. I'll get back to you after I talk to him tonight.

Hey, sorry it took a bit to get back to you. He does still have it, but the syncro is going out on first gear. He'll let it go cheap if the other one doesn't work out for you.

So I move into this neighborhood about a year ago and have not really met the neighbors, due mainly to their being gone and me being on the road.

This afternoon I look out and see his garage door go up and a shiny white on white TJ rolls out. I guess I should go meet my neighbor. And I thought he only had the cool shortbus party bus.
