I'm looking for places to ride near Birmingham. More specifically, near the 280/inverness area. I don't have much off time from work so the closer the better.

Piney Woods out in Four Mile/Westover used to be good (logging roads). Area has built up a lot though so I'm not sure how much is still unpaved and rutted.

Take 280 towards Sylacauga, turn right onto Co Rd 55. Go a few miles and turn left onto Co Rd 51. A mile or three in it will turn to dirt. Tons of offshoot logging roads and trails from there. Just watch for hunting club signs and no trespassing ones.

I've taken regular cars out through there many times and made it...of course, I took an 80's model lebaron through 3ft deep mud too so take "it's easy" with a grain of salt when I say it. :)

Search Shallow Creek Road, Wilsonville, AL on Google Maps to get to the general area.

I need a taller floor jack. I have to put mine on a piece of 2x10 to get it to raise my tires off the floor.

I had about an hour and a half on Sunday afternoon and I took a ride down Co Rd 51. Every side road seemed to be gated and marked with hunting club signs. When I came back out on paved Co Rd 61 I just looped back around to 55 and headed home.

It was still a nice ride on some paved country roads but there wasn't much ridable (is that a word?) dirt down there.

I just saw this thread. I'm out in the Hwy 280 / Hwy 119 area too.

I've been riding a little around the Cahaba River WMA below Helena but so many roads down there are gated and closed now.

I was thinking of riding down through the Talledega National Forest.

I'm not too interested in rock crawling but I wouldn't mind actually needing the 4 wheel drive a few times.

I just have a 2 inch lift with 32 inch tires. Everything else is pretty much stock.

Do the Skyway Motorway from US Highway 431 near Oxford to Highway 148 East of Sylacauga. You can also hit the middle off of Highway 77 East of Talladega. Takes about 2 hours start to finish but you should get the Delorme Atlas & Gazetteer Alabama Topographic Map Book which you can get for $20 at most large book stores. Street tires are fine when it is not raining although get ready for a bumpy ride and the road is not marked well in come cases where it crosses the paved roads. You have to dogleg a little around Chandler Springs and look/listen out for dirtbikes and ORVs around the corners!

Can't make it tomorrow but my problem is going to be 9 year old Fall Baseball and Flag Football through October. Football games are on Saturdays and baseball on Sunday afternoons. There may be some time to take a ride on a afternoon if we have football early or no baseball on a Sunday. I have to just play it by ear.

We'll be at Stoney Lonesome today around noon. The newly graded and banked trail 411/411b/412 entrance near landing zone 12 all the way at the back of the park is the one to do - as long as you have good tire tread! If it is your first time at Stoney Lonesome, set aside 20 minutes to fill out the paperwork and watch the safety video. Cost is $10+$5 per person and there will be plenty of folks riding today. You can download a couple of the forms ahead of time. A little less crowded on Sundays about 3. Maybe be a little rain coming in late afternoon. http://stonylonesomeohv.us/

Sorry I missed you guys. Spent the day appliance shopping with the family >_>. At least I got a good deal on some jack stands and a floor jack this weekend. Put my coil spacers on the front and my TJ is sitting nice n' level now. Also replaced headlights. Turned into a maintenance weekend. Fun, but not as fun as it could have been lol
