GMC could add a Jeep Wrangler competitor to its lineup in the future.

According to a recent report from The Wall Street Journal, GM is mulling an off-road SUV for its GMC brand that would be a direct competitor to the Jeep Wrangler. Rumors of GMC adding a capable off-road SUV to its lineup have been swirling since March 2014, but now the American automaker is polling its dealers to get a gauge on potential demand.

That right there is funny.

If GM had engineered the '90 YJ I have, I probably wouldn't be currently doing a rewiring, carb upgrade, heater redesign, cheap plastic parts replacement, etc.

It's a fun toy, but my '66 El Camino original parts don't disintegrate almost daily like this! And the Elkie has 3 times the miles on her.

I'm not talking about breakage from rough terrain but just cheap ass parts and plastic!

I should have kept my '50 Willys! It was a REAL Jeep! :)

Color me skeptical. I would love to see some competition too, but I bet it would be based off an existing platform which means its likely to be IFS and not a convertible. I doubt we'll really see anything in the same niche as the Wrangler. My opinion; hope I'm wrong.

I have wondered for years why no vehicle that can compare with Wrangler survives. We have one in Saudi called Land Cruiser LC70 which is excellent and I was going to buy except the Wrangler was cheaper and slightly better. But no competitor seems to survive world wide.

LC70 - rare
Short Nissan Patrol - canceled
Short LC Prado - rare
FJ Cruiser - canceled soon
Hummer series - canceled
Short soft top G Wagen - canceled
Defender - rare
Troller T4 - rare

Wrangler - hugely successful and spreading everywhere.

Why?

FJ Cruiser --- Toyota screwed up by not making it a convertible in my opinion. Those old FJ's are cool as hell. In my view, had Toyota made it a convertible it would have been the only vehicle that would have had a chance at competing with a Jeep. As soon as they announced it wasn't, I figured it was just a matter of time before they discontinued it.

Yeah, I heard about this and am not holding my breath... (Unless it has a diesel and solid axles/locking diffs and such) Hummer was the closest thing GM had to the modern Wrangler "competition" wise and that ended quickly with GM axing Hummer when the fuel scares started and then the aftermarket dwindled in Hummer support. (Yes I drive an H3 but like Jeep Wranglers) Jeep has found the winning formula when it comes to the Wrangler, I honestly think that GM should just keep to what they have going now and avoid round 2 in the offroad scene... (H1 and H3 did ok... But the H2 didn't do to hot...) Just my .2 cents...

While I love my new Jeep,I'll never down GM, I've seen someone put a Chevy engine in just about every known brand of vehicle, I'm and yet to see a single case of someone swapping in a different brand's engine into a GM. The 350 and LS engines are among the most popular and best built in the world. My Chevy Trailblazer has left a few Jeeps and Toyotas stuck in the mud and yes it received a tug or two likewise. I just wanted something I could take the top off and cruise down the beach or trail in, I was close to taking a sawzall to the Trailblazer but decided against it. A little competition would do the market some good.

Chevy makes a great small block, but I doubt they will put one in the concept if it ever sees production. Lately Chevy doesn't like to put V8s in anything but sports cars and full size SUV/trucks. Plus I'd be willing to bet the wrangler is a better platform to build off than the GMC concept will be.

I lost interest when the article mentioned Hummer. I loved my Chevys, but sounds more like a competitor for the Landrover crowd, esp since it's from "plush" GMC line.

With Wrangler sales skyrocketing the past few years, I'm surprised more automakers haven't thrown their hats into the arena. I would like to see more competition.

I'm a die hard Chevy guy....for Musclecars only. I have owned my 72 Z/28 since 1985 when I was 17. Let me say it again....I love GM Muscle. After 1973, you can keep them.

I'm not saying this just because I have owned 3 Jeeps. I just think that there's simply nothing like a Jeep and I can't even really explain why.

Remember Geo Trackers, Suzuki Samurai's, and there was an Isuzu attempt at a Jeep competitor and they all failed. Yet here's the Jeep Wrangler still popular after all this time.

I classify Jeep Wranglers/CJ's right up there with Corvette's and F-150 pickups/Chevy Silverado's. There's simply no real world competition. Corvette fans won't own anything else other than a Vette, for those who need a pick up for work or play the F-150/Silverado simply are in a class by themselves. Jeeps are the same way. There's nothing else out there that has the image like a Jeep.

Often imitated, never duplicated. Sorry, a Jeep-ish model by GMC will never offer the rich history and proven track record....if it lasts more than 50 years then maybe.

The problem is not making a competitive model - it's attracting an enthusiastic crowd that just keeps coming back. Jeep has this down to a science. All the other brands try to build an offroad rig, then get scared when the first model run doesn't pan out to the sales they thought it would and yanks it off the market.

It's no wonder why the sales of the competitive vehicles suck when your customers don't have any faith in your ability to continue supporting your own vehicles.
