CB antenna setup???

Just bought cobra 19 ultra III cb radio and a 4' truck spec antenna for my 05 wrangler. Unfortunately, after me and a buddy hooked it up, I'm getting a lot of static and can't hear much of what anyone else is saying. Plus I tried doing a mic check and no response. Ground wire seems to be good. I haven't tuned it yet because I have no swr meter, plan on getting one this weekend.

stop transmitting until you tune it. you can fry a radio doing that. check the ground with a multi meter too.

I'm not seeing an "isolator" on the antenna at the top of the mount. Or am I missing it?

Under the mount where the cable attaches is where the ground should be. Above the mount the antenna should be isolated from the mount/ground.....right?

I'm not sure what an isolator is, I'm pretty new to the whole cb thing. I do not believe my antenna is grounded? It is mounted on to my tire rack where I drilled holes in the plastic. Does it need to be mounted somewhere else?

Yes. You will need to run a ground strap to the frame or bare metal on the tub from the mount. The isolator would be like a plastic washer that came with the antenna mount. See attached.

Others more knowledgeable than me my chime in as well.

Ok. I remounted the antenna to one of the bolts that holds the tire rack to the tailgate. Also I finally found a swr meter, tested it, and the levels are still in the red around 5, I'm not sure where to go from here

SWR and CB Antenna Tuning Explained | Right Channel Radios

you need to tune the ant. 5-1 will blow your radio so be careful. your looking for a 1-1. mine runs 1.2-1 and it works pretty good at that.
