Matanzas State Forest?

Anyone ever been out to Matanzas State Forest? Looks like you need to register for a free day pass. Seems like there are trails/dirt roads that lead out to the Intracoastal waterway. I was thinking about possibly heading out there Sunday afternoon if anyone is interested?

Also, I just joined this forum, have a 2010 White JKU Sport

I did Huguenot last year and can attest to the JSO. Complete douches too. But it was fun watching all the cars wait hours for the tide to go back out while I just rolled past them dropping my buddies off at the parking lot. They had closed down the beach but kept letting me go with my old lifted YJ and 35" tires. I miss that jeep. But I will be back in May permanently (some short stops there until then) with my new JK. I am always down for a trip. I plan on living in either Riverside/5 points or San Marco.

Oh, and when I get back I will find those trails up in Callahan that I explored last year with my ex. Didn't have the jeep and was a bit tipsy (ok, a lot tipsy - I wasn't driving) but they seemed awesome.

Poly filled the sound bar what a hugh difference, I recommend it for all to do, its $6 of poly fiber (hobby store, walmart, fabric store) , six t15 torx screws to unscrew and stuff poly fiber everywhere you can get it into and 30 min time, for a much better sound and no plasticy rattle.

I've been interested to hear what Matanzas is like. Someone had told me that it's closed for part of the year. Is there somewhere to register online and check to see that its open?

Here is their site, doesn't say anything about being closed. I was going to call them to get a permit for Sunday afternoon to scope it out.

I assume any of the dashed lines would be open for off-roading. I'd like to find a better trail map. I may also contact them to see what's available.

Here was the response to my e-mail inquiring about a day pass at Matanzas. Driving on crushed concrete roads is not my idea of off-roading:

"Day use permits are issued over the phone through our district office (386) 446-6786. The permits are free of charge and are good for two weeks. Our policy is the forest is open during hunting seasons for all users and the gates are unlocked and a day-use-pass is not required during these days. Please refer to the website or WMA brochure for dates. Forest hours are from sunrise to sunset. Also, the only roads open for driving are named roads and have all been upgraded with crushed concrete. Our forest trails are closed to vehicular traffic. Off-roading is not permited on the forest, sorry. If you have further questions you can call 904-797-5073."

I was at Osceola about a month ago. Very wet then, but I don't know about currently. There are areas where I wouldn't advise going alone. In our group, we had 3 jeeps that had to be pulled out of mud holes, and a couple of areas where the stock jeeps took bypasses around deep water.

However, it was loads of fun, and I'll be going back in a couple of weeks. There are many miles of great trails, some that are relatively tame, and others that I wouldn't venture into without help close by. Also, I managed to get through without pinstriping my jeep but there some trails where the brush is very tight on the trails, so be forewarned. I put a thick coat of wax on my jeep before leaving and I think that helped.

There are some main roads/trails and those were relatively dry, and then trails that go off from the main roads. If you stick to those main trails you would probably be fine. Some of the minor trails were fairly obvious that they were going to be pretty wet just looking down the trail.

I went with someone that knew the forest and had been on the trails before so he kind of knew what to expect, but even he remarked that it had more water than usual. I have a feeling it won't be as wet now as it had been then. We did have some trails maps but I'm not sure where we got those. I was mostly just following anyway, so I didn't pay much attention to the maps. Might be worth trying to hunt those down if you can. I'm not sure if the maps indicated which were the main trails versus the minor trails but they were pretty obvious because they tended to be wider with less brush. There are a lot of trails and we only hit a small part of the forest spending most of a Sunday there.

Found the maps we had. I scanned the map page for the area we were in, which is in the southeast corner off of US 90 east of Ocean Pond. I'm not sure how well you can see the map, but the lighter lines are the main trails and the darker, hashed lines are minor trails. There is an Olustee Depot Visitor Center on the left bottom corner of the map which looks like its right off US 90 that might have some more info/maps, if it's open.

This map page is 1 of 19 so you can see the forest is huge, although most of the roads/trails are on the south end of the forest off US 90. I don't think we left this area on the map and we were there for 4-5 hours, including stopping for lunch and to pull out some stuck jeeps. I do remember crossing I-10 (probably on the 207 designated road) so we got to the north end of this map. The overpass over 1-10 was the only paved section we were on.

My jeep and I would love to move down to the Jacksonville area (ok, I'll have to bring the family along, as well). Anyone have any job leads for a .NET programmer?

Thanks a lot! This is perfect since it's so close to my location.

I'll give him a call today. I'm starting my Rock Krawler 2.5" Max Travel lift install today.

Jeep Repairs/Parts/Service

Hi There,

I'm trying to find the best parts/repair/service options for my 2001 Jeep Sahara, in Jacksonville.

I have a 4" Fab-Tec lift kit, air lockers, lights, and aftermarket bumpers.

I need a new top latch, and rear top hold-downs (bolts? latches?).
My a/c diverter valve is stuck, so most flow is to windshield - fix?
I also need a radio/stereo person to check out the sound system.

I'm looking forward to some beginner trails!

Thanks,
Jeff

Went to Osceola Nat'l. Forest last weekend. What a blast. Spent a good part of Sunday though washing off the mud and buffing out the pinstripes.
