New to the Jeep World (Ocala,FL)

Hey fellow Floridians. I finally got me a Jeep last weekend and looking for any local help for future upgrades to the Jeep. I am not going to lie, I am mechanically retarded and really don't feel like shelling out dealer prices for simple upgrades. I know a lot of you guys are probably great with a wrench and could help a fellow Jeep guy out one day.

Here is a couple things what I want in the near future.

1- Bumper with winch mount. (any input on what ones to get would be great)
2- K/C lights on the top. (same as above)

*I am going to stay stock for awhile on tires (17" Destination A/T) but looking for some black rims (or maybe even paint my stock ones?). Any suggestions on where to look locally?

PS- Also, are there any trails near/around Ocala for an off-road newbie like myself? Keep in mind that I do have a stock Jeep.

welcome to the chaos and congrats on the new rig... i'll offer a couple of recommendations based on what you've said below.

1. a bumper with the winch mount (steel or just about any metal for that matter) is going to have quite the effect on your stock rigs suspension. figure most bumpers weigh at least 60 lbs, and a winch is another 90 lbs. so ask one of your 150 lbs friends to stand on your bumper and watch what that does...

1a. if you're going to stay stock for a while.. and you want a winch - you can put a winch on a stock bumper... that'll save you for as long as you want... or until you make some other decisions.
1b. i think it's a very good idea to stick with a stock jeep for a while honestly. get to know what a stock rig can do... and what you really want to do with it, then decide on the types of modifications you want to do both for looks and off roading capability.

2. rigid industries... those lights are ridiculous. i have a set of a-pillar Hella lights - if you're looking for the round style... but i'm telling you. buy rigid industry LED lights. the difference is substantial.

a couple of other notes... you're way the heck up in Ocala... but if and when we make some runs up there (we're doing one in the first part of July) i'll reach out to you if you're interested. there are plenty of trails off SR 40 and the Hard Rock ORV is up there also.

as for local shops, if you're willing to travel to Tampa, i could provide some recommendations. outside of that, i can't help you much. another option, online - there are several vendors on this forum that will be happy to assist you with some of that stuff...

Appreciate the feedback!

I never really thought about the winch/bumper weight and now you have me thinking lol. I may just wait until I lift it (just going to do a 2.5" lift and stick some aggressive 33's on).

The trails off 40-are they OK for a stock Jeep? I know the forest has a shit-ton of trails, just want the basic trails for now. Gotta get used to this thing. I am coming from a 2WD F-150 :-) which never saw trails.

I do like the LED's, but than again I do like the round lights. I spoke with the guys at 4WD parts in Orlando/Jax and they said they are similar in price. I love the idea of the LED's using such limited voltage.

there are other ways around it... you could throw a leveling spacer in the front end for a while till you decide on a lift. (if you want to throw a winch on - which isn't a bad idea... a tow strap and a winch... it's about the best recovery tools there is)

the 2.5" lift is very popular around here.. one of my good buddies, FLJEEPLEO has the teraflex 2.5" lift and he wheels hard - but i'd recommend that down the road, get to know your rig first!

as for the trails of SR 40, there are some sketchy areas i'd stay away from in a stock rig... but you would be okay - want to go out with another for sure, just in case. be mindful this time of year a lot of underbrush is overgrown so you're going to scratch up your rig... i hate to say it... but summer in florida and wheelilng.... yeah you're going to.

the hard rock has plenty for a stock rig also. there's stuff there for everyone through the extreme guys... only two bad things... 1 - freaking fire ants and 2 - it has a 25 admission fee but the trails are well maintained... and you're less likely to pinstripe your rig...

I was thinking about a level kit first and foremost. I am not a fan of a the little nose-dive the stock's have. Anything I should look out for when getting a level kit installed?

Also, does the "death wobble" come into play on one with a level kit installed?

very easy to install a leveling kit... it's something you can do yourself or with a couple buddies... just remove the spring, install spacer and spring and you're set...

as for DW, well - there's no guarantee that you won't get DW on a stock rig -- but you should be fine. since you're not messing with the track bar or control arms... yeah you'll be okay.

I'm not too far from you (just north of Gainesville). The lift is pretty simple. I did my 2.5" lift in a matter of hours in the driveway. The stock jeep is pretty stout and you will be impressed with that. But like it was stated, figure out what your plans are first, test the stock set up and then go from there. I hit Hardrock with just a tire upgrade and did just fine. The good part about that place is that if you don't feel comfortable with an obstacle, you can just go around (most of them).

Thanks for the reply. Ya, I am not looking at an actual lift for about a year or so. Then I am just going to a 3" lift and maybe toss some 35's on it. I spoke with Happy Trails (in Jax) and they can do the level kit for $230 out the door.

Ever heard of them?

You are in Lake Butler? You know any of the Traver's?

Shoot me a PM if you want somebody to wheel with in Ocala. I'm about 50 min away in Daytona. Mornings would be great before it gets too blistering hot.

Don't know any of the Traver's and yea I've heard of Happy Trails. They sponsor a lot of stuff in the area and I've heard no bad things about them.

You could also check out the Ocala Jeep Club. They are a very active group with a mix of stock to built rigs. Might even have some members in your neighborhood.
