Am planning a trip to the ONF next month when it cools a bit. I have not been there in years an understand there are some nice off road trails to explore. I will be heading there on SR 40 from Daytona. How do I locate the trails and where to get permit if needed? I have followed a few links and searched the websites, I find information but no trail maps. I'd like to plan a few and see what's available there. I know many of you know it well, please point me in the right direction.
No permit needed. Most trails are not marked. 385K acres of play ground. Bring a gps and pick a trail. Big Scrub is a good starting place should be on your gps,
To a point yes..but i've been thru a few areas where AT THE VERY LEAST you need 4wd. sugar sand
bring food and water check out Salt springs off US 19. I don't remember the FR # but it's just past the Salt Springs campground on the right side. Take the correct fork in the road and it'll take you to a couple nice spots by the river
Most trails are pretty easy to navigate. There are parts that are prone to flooding when it's real wet. Other than that, lots of sugar sand and bugs that appear to be genetically engineered. I'd still suggest going with a partner in case you run into mechanical issues. Also, be careful or stay away altogether during hunting season.
I was with FJOA and US Forestry when they shut down some trails and created 4 Wheel Drive Way. I think it will show up in a search on Google maps, if not go to floridajeepers.net and it's somewhere on there. It's off 19, between 40 and 42. I'll try to find it this evening when I get back home. Neat place, not too technical of course since it's Florida and all, but it's pretty scenic in most places. There's also a place on 42 between 44 and 19 that's pretty doable in a stock Jeep.

I know this is an old thread but I went for the first time yesterday and made the mistake of going in with all the windows down and out. We were attacked by these genetically engineered bugs. Horseflies as big as a horse swarmed us to be exact! ? We quickly pulled off and buttoned everything down and after that it was an awesome ride through. Was my first time here and first time on trails at all.
I went for the first time today. It was pretty fun and the TJ was covered in mud after about 10 minutes. I saw a dozen jeeps and noone waved back, pretty snobish IMO. Anyway I'll be going back soon I hope, I had a good time all by myself.
The trails there are pretty tame. Great place to get used to your rig. Stay off the unmarked/un-numbered trails. You could be in for some hefty fines that I hear add up by tire count since bikes and quads play out there too.
I went last weekend. First time the jeep had seen mud. Had a great time with the wife and kids. We went top up and AC on. It was great. Checked out one of the springs it was awesome.
Get the Avenza map app. Then load the Ocala national forest map. It is free and shows all the roads in the forest. Works great!!
This is what the forest stations recomend.
