Outer banks beach camping.

My wife and I will be spending the last week in September in the outer banks for our 25th anniversary. We are looking to drive the jeep on the beach and camp. Does anyone know if this is possible? Anywhere from Corolla to Okracoke works for us.
Any help is appreciated.

We stayed in Corolla. The 4x4 beach is next one called Carova. It was awesome. We had top off, doors off driving through the sand loving it. We stopped and stayed for the day and saw some awesome wild horses. I have plenty of pics. We had friends that rented a house in Carova. So it goes Duck, Carolla then Carova (4×4) beach. You'd be surprised how many people think they can drive on it ha ha. Tow truck driver sits in lot right before no road.... Be prepared for Best time ever. We went in August too.

I have driven on that beach but was wondering if you can camp on the beach.
Thanks for posting.

Camping is only allowed in designated campgrounds. and there are none in Corolla. I think there's too much traffic for there to be people camping right on the beach. I haven't been on the southern beaches but I'm sure its the same. Driving on The Beach - North Carolina Beach Driving & Off-Road Vehicles - The Outer Banks - North Carolina
Here's some rules I've seen before..
I have been on it in January and May/June. have heard it only closes in certain weather situations.

Yes, it's lovely there!! Thanks for that info you sent previously. I arrived there at 7am when there was hardly anyone on the beach...it was so peaceful and beautiful! I'm planning a trip back in mid sept.

How about Portsmouth Island, NC. We are heading there Monday 25th for week. Anyone been there? Google it. Looks awesome! A deserted island.

Hey Dawn.
We have camped at Freeman Park on Carolina Beach many times and always have fun. A little crazy sometimes but fun. Portsmouth looks really quiet. Just me, the wife and two bid dogs.

Went two years ago. Bring plenty of bug spray if your camping. The little cottages are nice and good bath houses there. The ferry ride over seemed like it took forever but it was a great experience except for the Mosquitos.

Also to add me and my wife will be there with our jeep the same weekend sept 25-28. It's not 25yr anniversary but only 5yr lol. Fishing and sand is our goal!

Just got back from Portsmouth Island. We stayed in a little round cabin. The weather was perfect and we had a great time. Due to wind and a storm off the coast, the water was too deep at the flats to go see Portsmouth Village. Would love to plan a trip with fellow jeepers and make the trek together.

There are several state/fed campgrounds at the southern end of the OBX. They are pretty much on the beach. Oregon Inlet, Hatteras, Ocracoke. All are pretty much just on the other side of the dunes. Since the winds can kick up good there, this isn't a bad thing. Plus you get bathroom ficilities and water source. You can get a permit to drive on the beaches, $50 for a week. The good thing is most of the bird and turtle eggs have hatched so most of it is back open now. I just got back and would pick Ocracoke since the beaches are so wide and beautiful if staying in one of the state/fed parks.

Looks like you had a blast! Headed to hatteras next month for a little fishing and beach riding. Did ya hit up Howard's pub in Ocracoke? Always a good stop after ferry ride and a little shot down the road.
