Seeking tips & advice for first trip to Freeman Park @ Carolina Beach

Hi everyone,

I recently moved to Charlotte, NC and my girlfriend really wants to go to the beach. I would really like to go somewhere that allows 4x4 access so we can have the Jeep right by us and have everything handy and possibly sleep in it since I just bought a Coleman SUV air mattress.

Some of my initial research tells me that Freeman Park at Carolina Beach is one of the few places that allows Jeep access to the beach, so I'm targeting that place. What I'm wondering is if anyone has any tips on the location itself, things we should or should not bring beyond the obvious stuff (cooler, chairs, sunscreen, pillows & sleeping bags/blankets, etc), and any tips regarding driving and parking the Jeep in the sand. We've never gone camping before, so we don't have any real camping gear to speak of.

Currently, our Jeep has no lift or quick disconnects, 285/70/17 Goodyear Duratracs and I do have a winch, in the event I'm stuck AND within about 100 feet of something strong enough to winch on. This is what we'll be driving and probably sleeping in:

Sorry, just saw this post. Welcome to NC.
Freeman park is great. We don't camp but do go out there often. You should not have any trouble driving on the sand, many basic 4x4 vehicles go out there without trouble. Our jeeps do great. Don't get out there nearly enough.
I would suggest an annual pass as opposed to the daily rate.
Carolina beach is not a fancy built up area, if you're looking for quiet relaxing and nice beach it's great. Lots of nice but simple places to eat that are good. Brit's donuts on the boardwalk are MUST.

Good luck

Go to CB regularly and drive on the beach. My jeep is stock and don't have any issues on the sand. If you have traction control on your Jeep I would recommend disengaging it. I second Britts donuts.

Thanks for the responses. I'm glad that I shouldn't have any issues when we finally make it there. Hopefully next week.

Just saw this thread. Out here now and spent the day at Freeman park and had a blast with no trouble in the Jeep. So nice to be able to drive out on the beach and not lug anything from a parking lot or place you are staying. Disengaged traction control and stayed in 4hi. You'll be fine!

Also, Britts is only open Fri- Sun right now.... Bummer

You've got Fort Fisher at the other end of the island from Freeman Park. The Outer Banks has more places to drive on the sand.

I would also suggest the outer banks. about 2 to 3 hours longer drive from charlotte, but WELL worth it. no coparison in the side of the beaches you can drive on.

You jeep wifll be fine, You may want to air down your tires and bring an air conpressor.

Freeman park is great. My wife and I tent camp it. Been doing it for 4 years. Its growing larger every year crowd wise. Dominoes and Papa Johns will deliver to your camp site and so will brew thru. You can have camp fires as long as there in a burn bucket. As far as quiet. Maybe in the fall. Defiantly not in the summer. people driving their trucks and rigs up and down the beach all nite long. But we love it.

I just moved to Wilmington and am about 6 miles from Freeman Park.

As the OP asked, any suggestions as to preparation to drive on the beach? I have a compressor but is it really necessary to let air out of the tires. I have a 2014 Wrangler. Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

Britts donuts

Hi---I know that place for sure.My uncle opened that place many many years ago. He's passed back in the 50's so I do mean many years ago.His two sons worked in the family business very early on.I "think" the man that bought it from the family first worked there as an employee. It's almost a sin To go to Carolina Beach an not get a Britt's donut.

I've never had to air down while out there. I would suggest turning off traction control but other than that you shouldn't have any issues.

Your correct, been there and Fort Fisher a few times now and no problems without letting air out of the tires which is great. I live 6 miles from Freeman Park and have to just drive onto the beach and off, no deflating the tires and then having to fill them back up.

Is May a good time to camp out there? Thinking about taking my wife out there. Do you have to bring your own burn bucket?

ive never had to air down in my stock 2012 2 door jk. I am not stock anymore but when I was I spent many weekends there never changing a thing on my jeep. minus hitting 4 hi and trac button off. Meaning you want the light on the dash on.

Yeah you need to bring something to have your fire in. they dont let you just burn in the sand. that way the beach doesnt get trashed and people dont start getting flats. You should also think about bringing your own wood. Im sure you can buy it down there but its pricey. They will deliver firewood, beer, pizza, ice cream. all to your campsite. And dont ever worry about getting stuck. There are so many friendly people with 4x4 more then willing to help you out. Maybe if your lucky your will see the BFT. You will no when you see it. HAHA

Thanks for the helpful information. I'll have to look into a portable fire pit. That's really cool that they will deliver all those things. We are excited to come down there. Probably the earliest would be end of May. One more thing, is there designated camping spots on the beach or is it more post up where you want?
