Western NC, Brown Mtn Trip

Anybody want to get a May weekend trip up to Brown Mtn Offroad Park north of Morganton?
If not, does anybody know any more local trails around the Asheville area. I've found a few but their all short trails. Please Help!

There is Hurricane Creek near the TN line. It's close to the Fines Creek exit off of 40. Creek crossings, mud holes, climbing, etc. I took my stock Ranger there a few years ago and it did okay. I'd like to do that again. It's about 45 mins. from Asheville.

I may have to pass the word about Hurricane Creek along to my husband. We'll be in the area in June with the JK

Just found location of Hurricane Creek and apparantly awsome view of buzzard (roost?) right on TN line. Same distance from me as the Flats.

Since you can't make flats Mike and anyone else, lets plan something maybe June 12. I've got another TJ and possible JK and stock XJ 30's that might come aswell.

Heard its easy to miss off I-40.

June 12th might work for me. I need to get a spare tire before then though. Wife's out of work, so unsure if that'll happen before then. If not, my buddy has an old 4-Runner and would be interested.

Yes, H-Creek is easy to miss. It's just a break in the guardrail on the side of I-40. The time I went, we actually came in from the top of the mountain.....off the Fines Creek exit. We then made it down the mountain and exited on I-40. I don't know my way around there. We just kind of headed downhill.

Well then, if it's 5x4.5 pattern it looks like we're in business. I might take you up on that if I don't have one by then.

I'll mark it on the calendar and round up a buddy or two. My friend Howie lives right over the mountain on Fines Creek. Maybe I can set up a cookout afterwards?.....he'd love that.

Great map Mike! We should plan to meet at the exit before the trail and grab a late breakfast or early lunch.

Yeah, we could get breakfast before and have lunch out on the trail somewhere. My buddy will be out of town, so no after-ride cookout. Real nice stream and I hear there's good fishing in it.

Sheered 3 teeth off spider gears in my Dana 35 at the flats last weekend. Got a 44 going to pick up friday. Have to put axle shafts in it and bolt it in this weekend (hopefully). If all goes well should have no prob still making it to hurricane creek. Noticed couple guys going to Uwarrie that same weekend. Think I'll wait to put in front locker before that trip.

EdJones - Too bad about your 35, let me know if you can still make it.

Who else is coming? Biltmore Hardees is out of our way (Arden/Bent Creek) so I was thinking meeting somewhere further down 40, like Candler or Canton?

If we get done early enough, I may head up to Max Patch before going home.

I'm down in Arden as well, right off sweeten creek. My axle shafts didn't come in yet so I might be pressed for time. Might have to leave work early one day and put it all together! Friend supposed to let me borrow that SWR thing sometime this week.

Mike,

I really appreciate this information. My friend and I departed N Asheville yesterday and we found this trail. There was a light drizzle and the creek was moving pretty fast. I had some "concerning" moments in my stock 1995 Wrangler Sahara, but overall she did very well.

There is a point where the road forks left or you can go straight. We kept straight in an effort to keep climbing the mountain, but we were unsure we made the right call and turned around once the rain picked up. It was late in the day and we didn't want to spend the night because we got stuck in the thick mud or crossing the growing creek.

What is at the end of that trail? Can you recommend any other trails around Asheville that you can have tried that you think a stock Wrangler could handle? I have four fairly new Goodyear Fortera 75R15 on it.

Again, I appreciate all of the info...take care.

Glad you found the place. I'm not sure about that turn you made...I've only been there once and we went the downhill direction. If you'd kept climbing, it pops out on a farm, which leads to pavement on top of the mountain. That road takes you down and back to 40. From the topo map (look up a Google satellite image) and what I remember, you follow the creek the whole way in either direction.
Other trails around Asheville: If you know anyone in Candler, there are many miles of 4x4 trails there. You'd have to go with a "local" as a lot of it goes on private property....it's all around the base of Mt. Pisgah. The "locals" I know are crazy rednecks and I'm not going wheeling with them.

EdJones: We can postpone this trip Saturday if necessary...no problem.
