Flagpole Adopt a Forest Road Poll

I propose that the Virginia Jeep Forum of WranglerForum.com adopt the Flagpole forest road as a road that we will work with the Forest Service to maintain and then improve.

If you are with me please vote yes and let your fellow forum users know to vote.

There is one thing that we can do right now as a user community to maintain our forest roads. Whenever we have a group drive, the last vehicle in the group is designated the litter cleanup vehicle. The idea being to bring a long a hefty trashcan bag and fill up at least half the bag with forest road-side trash. Vehicles in the group can rotate to the rear so one person isn't tasked with area beautification for the whole drive. We can do this with any forest road not just Flagpole.

Who is with me?

I am interested in setting up a Flagpole Trail Cleanup this Earth Day weekend (Saturday-Sunday April 20-21). Anyone willing to participate?

I have some contacts in the USFS to arrange.

Flagpole is a popular wheeling 15 mile long forest road in the northern section of the George Washington National Forest about 25 minutes drive from Harrisonburg . It is administered by the North River Ranger District. Flagpole gets its name from Flagpole Knob which is along the route. Assuming you start on Union Springs road you gradually ascend the ridge of Slate Mountain. The route has nice views and one or more stream crossings. There are seasonal forest roads along the way that may or may not be locked. There are also other roads intersecting with Flagpole that are worth exploring. There are also camping spots along the roads.

Flagpole is popular with wheelers because it is the one of very few remaining year round forest roads in the northern GWNF with a technical section. The technical section consists of a short rock step. It is called "The Steps". Use of a spotter is suggested, however, the crux can be done in a stock Wrangler.

How to get there. Many wheelers fuel at the Harrisonburg Sheetz and then proceed 13 miles to the trailhead via Clover Hill and Union Springs roads.

You can paste these coordinates into Google Maps
Start point: N38.47171 W79.05927
It's worth airing down for this road. 24 PSI is adequate and will allow you to head back into Harrisonburg to air back up.
Using the National Geographic Trails Illustrated Map #791
Proceed along Union Springs road (FR 225). The road changes to FR225B then to FR85A then to FR85.
End point: N38.48202 W79.22145
You need to visit Reddish Knob a short paved drive away once you are done. It's a great view.

Flagpole is at risk because it is a well-travelled forest road and wheelers drive on illegal trails that intersect with the forest road. This forces the Forest Service to devote scarce resources to shutting down unauthorized trails and issuing citations (which they will do). We want to address this issue by adopting the trail and working with the Forest Service to incorporate "skills sections" along the road.

I always go up Route 33 through Rawley Springs, easy as pie to find. Just about three hours from Tidewater. Continue West on the two lane blacktop until it begins to wind up the mountains toward West Virginia. First center turn lane painted on the road - take it. Find a nice campsite past the reservoir, set up the tent and campfire, get back on the trails by noon.

I'm in.

The 9th trip will be my 3rd trip up there. Really enjoy the ride and think it is worth keeping.
I grew up hiking in the Rockies and Cascades, and these hills at flag pole are the best I've seen yet in this area.

I want and will participate with this activity in general, but unfortunately for this and very fortunate for me, my wife and I have a weekend away in the Catskills that weekend so we won't be able to make it.
