Flagpole Fall Foliage?

Anyone know roughly when the best weekend would be to organize a Flagpole run for some of my neighborhood Jeepers to check out the peak fall foliage? I was thinking it may be 2nd or 3rd weekend in October, but not sure with the different elevations, and not overly familiar with the area.

Our club (NovaJeepers) are planning a ride up the 3rd weekend (Oct. 19).

What do you mean 'peak'? The NPS will post percentages of transfer as you go through the season, both for SNP and the BR Pkway - it is a good source (last year they determined peak at week of Oct 26 for mid elevations, a week or 2 before for higher). Some folks like full trees with color and the early bloomers, that's coming quickly. Some folks like the deep oranges, reds, and yellows of late foilage, probably looking early Nov for that, but many trees will have dropped by then. Late Oct is always a good bet for a good mix... if anything, this year will be slightly earlier than typical. Fwiw, I will go for a cruise the weekend of the 19th and probably again the 26th. I am (also) thinking the 19th will be the best weekend this season.

Dogwoods are already red, maples are turning yellow, locusts are a wonderful rust, and oaks are starting to turn. Hickories are getting there, with a leaf or two starting. I would say right now 3k' and up is at 5% color. Sassafras, virginia creeper, poison ivy, and company havent started yet, those will be mid oct - mid nov, with the deep rust orange, red, yellow, crimson colors. Most hickories, dogwoods, maples, oaks, black walnuts, and other vibrant glowing orange, red, and yellows will be off by Nov 1, likely a week sooner.

Hey Jeff saw the pic of your jeep with a snorkel.

I might want to tag along if I finish fixing my clutch. Planning on doing it myself the weekend before, since Fair Oaks refused the warranty because of my taking it off-road.

Yeah, unfortunately I can't go because I have some company in town, and something for my kid's school that day. If you need extra hands with the clutch, let me know, I think I'm free that weekend before.

Thanks for all the feedback. I was leaning towards around the 3rd weekend, so that would be the 19th. I guess I'm pretty well on the money then.

With how quickly things are developing, you would not be wrong to look at the weekend of the 12th either.

At Flagpole Saturday. Not too much but things are beginning to turn already. Don't wait too long!

I say we get 30 jeeps to drive it. F''k em. But the Parkway is still very much open, so idk if they would actually close it. The park / skyline dr is very closed, even the App Trail. The USFS and GWTJ sites say they are closed, but for an explination of what that entails they direct you to their daddy, the USDA, which currently has no website. They actually took the time to pull it down.

I was thinking the same thing...but $150 ticket? But then, get caught...by whom if no one is working? Oh well, hopefully it will not last 2 more weeks anyway. I have alot of neighbors who wouldn't be able to stand that...

oh that's the funny part, most of the rangers are STILL working, however, I looked it up, through roads are open, facilities are closed. Meaning flagpole trail is open as a through road, but you can't venture around

what do you mean by "venture around"? Are you talking about going on all the off shoots on Flagpole? I have only been up there once, and I thought anything off the main road was off limits and you could be fined for. Am I correct?

As I understand it, the road (and ONLY the road) is open. For instance, pulling off to the side to watch birds would be unlawful. Doing anything other than driving through, point a to b, would be an illegal use of land that you own and that is specifically reserved for the recreational use of citizens. Somehow.

Hey Turbo, could you share your source/contact? If the shutdown persists, I'd like to follow-up and be crystal clear before I take a bunch of guys out there (and quite a few kids as well).

ill be your source I am running and camping Shoe Creek trail Saturday night.

The roads and such are from the National Park Service, let me log on the CPU and I will post what I have for national forest. No where does it say closing a EXCEPT for federal activity areas, etc (bathrooms, parking areas) I also have many friends that live just at the bottom of flagpole, they are still hunting the land, which is legal, as long as they have their permit (which will not be issued during a shutdown) give me a few

Directly from the USFS website:

Due to the lapse in agency funding, the sale of all types of permits (i.e., recreation, firewood, forest products, mineral materials for example) are suspended, recreation.gov reservations are suspended, and all federally owned recreation sites are closed. All offices are closed. These services will be available once funding is restored.

Law enforcement, fire suppression, and other essential services will continue without interruption.

This web site will remain available for public safety announcements and updates such as for wildfire, floods, and so forth. We will attempt to make timely updates about public health and safety on these web pages as appropriate. We sincerely regret this inconvenience.

For general information on Forest Service shutdown procedures, please visit Agency Contingency Plans | The White House

Camped out, no problems! Nelson Co. Sheriff came out, but that's because he has a hummer pick up and just makes sure everyone is being good. The bathrooms at the top were "closed" with a sign on the door, but it was unlocked and open. Everything is good to go! Woods are open!!!

Awesome info, thanks!

How was the progression looking? I'm guessing this weekend and next weekend are the peak out there, from what I have been able to find online anyway.

Coming along nicely. The smaller sassafrass and va creeper are taking off, and the larger hickories and oaks are starting. Smaller maples have become vibrant red or yellow. Redbuds have been taking off as well.

Anytime now is a good time to go, but peak season is still probably 1-2 weeks out. I may go up the hill in a little while and take some pics.

New to Jeeps and the East Coast.

Planning to go to Flagpole in November during Veterans Day weekend. Anyone know if there is a better website that shows the trail other than this?: Virginia Birding and Wildlife Trail » Mountain Trail » North River » Flagpole Knob

Also, for anyone who has done this trail before, any opinions of what it's like for a beginner? I'm running Rubicon 2013 stock, no winch or snorkel.

Thanks in advance guys.
