One of my favorite FP runs was during a rain storm last summer. We got to the meadow at top and saw a huge storm rolling in (have some great pics on my home cpu but Im at work now). We shoveled down lunch and got back in the rigs just as the storm started howling.

Our small group rescued a couple of mountain bikers hiding under a tree and drove down the switchbacks in a torrential downpour. Could barely see the taillights of the rig in front of ya and the ruts were flowing water downhill, but we kept it slow and traction really wasn't all that bad. It was by far the most memorable and fun wheeling experience I've had out there, except for reconnecting and airing back up in the rain...

Im a bit more worried about ice on the trails. Folks on last weeks forum sounded like it was a bit treacherous up there, hopefully the rain will help melt away any leftovers splotches of it.

Man.. another outing I have to miss due to work travel. I SOOOO wish I could go and it pour down rain. That would be a great wheeling trip up there.

Good news the weather is breaking on the work front and will be able to get back out. Have no fear, Jason will not lead you astray. He is a confident and fearless (at least with his own rig) Trail BOZZ (now if a certain owner of a gecko rubi would try the rocks

Have fun guys, as always KEEP SAFE and Tread Lightly.

I went out last weekend and we got about 1/3 before we had to turn around. About 1/4 of that was blazing new that nobody else had been on. It's been warmer all week than the week before, no new snow (rain the other night as I was tracking the radar) and warm tomorrow and Saturday. I don't think ice will be an issue. With rain potentially coming down then we might have some slush bit it's seems to me like most snow/ice would be gone by time we hit the trails Saturday.

Flagpole Knob Trip 16 March 2013

By the way, I think the biggest problem last weekend was the higher we went the deeper the snow so there wasn't enough melt underneath to make the ice slushy so you could cut through it or just too deep in general where your frame we get lifted on stock or slightly lifted jeeps and your tires wouldn't get purchase. I would think with the warmer weather and rain at the beginning of the week and warmer weather tomorrow/Saturday the snow height would be drastically down.

I plan on attending.

Which Group you are part of: 1
CB or Radio / Both / None: Both. Due to the lack of ground on my tire mount, my CB is pretty limited.
Winch Yes or No: No
Recovery Gear Type / Amount: No recovery gear at the moment.
Any additional info you might think is important to pass on. I am still very green and haven't had a chance to order any equipment since last week :/

I won't be able to make it this weekend. I'm trying to do the Shenandoah 100 this year so I have to start putting miles on my bike.

For anyone thinking about staying down there for the weekend, there are a fair amount of camping locations along the various forest roads. I've GPSed most of them. Civilians can also stay at the Sugar Grove Navy NIOC. We had a nice 3 bedroom unit for $70. Meals are very inexpensive on base.

For Day 2, go explore Second Mountain, Dictum Ridge and Feedstone Mtn off of Long Run. And if you live in Northern VA, stay off of I-81 and take the smaller roads home.

Last weekend wasn't a good time to be without Mud Snow tires. Ultimately, it wasn't the ice (there actually wasn't much ice) that did us in. It was heavy, wet snow combined with the steep road grade.

I'll tell you, for winter wheeling I think a $90 investment in chains for the rear wheels is the best bang for the buck. I've noticed that in slippery conditions my JK's back end wants to slide around. That all goes away with chains.

I use the HDDS07 Diamond Type "S" with a ratchet tensioning system. Use Type S chains to accommodate the limited inner clearance on stock wheels. That chain is designed for road use and wouldn't be acceptable in rocky technical wheeling situations. They do work well on your average GWNF forest road though. They are light, not too expensive, and easy to mount. I'm going to mount up some wheels with 4.5" back space. Once I do that I'll be comfortable using Type S' on the front and more agressive chains on the rear.
Based, on my experiences last Sunday I ordered an extra back country snow shovel so that I can have two on hand. I also ordered an inflatable Bushranger X-Jack. Having one of those on hand would have saved me a lot of digging to get a PSP traction plate under my tires. BTW, my wife got to witness one of the plates shooting out. Those things can be lethal.

They do have cabin type units but we ended up with a mobile home. It was fine though. Sugar Grove NIOC is conveniently located for a weekend of wheeling. The NIOC are all those satellite dishes you see down in the valley when on Flagpole. If you decide to stay there PM me and I'll give you beta.

Why am I staying off I-81?

Yeah, for the scenic drive although it does mean a longer day. There are a quite a few parallel roads. VA 11, 340, 42, WV 258 to name a few. We took Sweedlin Valley Road back to Moorefield last Sunday. Got on 55 and came home that way. I found a new wheeling road (Peru Gap) to check out. Some of these public VA and WV roads have real possibilities for wheeling and touring. They aren't built to modern grade standards and not maintained well in the winter.

For sure! This time still would've been just one jeep. I had foot surgery a few weeks ago. I have started driving this week but wouldn't have been ready for off road.

Have fun!
