Once Jason/Reaper posts the trail plan tomorrow you will get an idea when we will hit I81 from I66. I can't imagine you would miss the Jeep caravan and at least you could join there. I think that's about 10 miles south of Winchester.

Yup amazon is a good source, for those that don't want to mount a external antenna yet , I would recommend the midland handheld , you can use it on the trails and jeep convoys without the external mounted antennas on your rig . But you cqn always add one later and still use it with the midland radio . Plus its portable

Hey guys, I will have the trip/trail plan posted either late tonight or tomorrow morning. I have to watch my daughter for a few hours and then I get to try to install the viair constant duty that I thought had everything I needed like the description said. Just for info purposes the brake booster mount does not come with any of the viair oba systems.... sucks

Trip / Trail Plan

Hey everyone!

Here are the details for our flagpole run on Saturday March 9th

From here on out please no more thread jacking, we can start another thread for people that want to discuss the trip or want to talk about other things.

For the people leaving from NOVA we will be group 1
For the people leaving from Fredericksburg area you will be group 2
For anyone else that is on the western side of Virginia you will be group 3 (You will meet us in Harrisonburg)

Groups 2+3 you will meet us at the sheetz located at
798 East Market Street, Harrisonburg, VA

If you are attending this trip please send a Reply with the following details:
Which Group you are part of
Recovery Gear
CB or Radio / Both / None
Winch Yes or No
Recovery Gear Type / Amount
Any additional info you might think is important to pass on.

Schedule

0715-0730am Meet up at
Sheetz
15315 Washington Street
Haymarket, VA
(From DC get off on Route 15. Stoplight make a left. Sheetz will be less than a mile on the left side.)

0745am Depart for Harrisonburg, Va (Route 33 West)

0915am Arrive in Harrisonburg, Va (Route 33 West)
Meet up with the guys coming from Richmond area.
Guys from Richmond will wait at the Sheetz located at
798 East Market Street, Harrisonburg, VA

I will lead group 1 across the street to a bigger parking lot (cant find the address to make it easy to locate). I will then head over to sheetz and grab the guys from group 2 and 3 and lead them to the bigger parking lot.

1000am Leave Harrisonburg, heading for the trailhead.

Trailhead Arrival: From here we will make stops as needed (depending on conditions).

Once I have a list of people coming I will break the entire group into smaller groups (Depending on the turn out, I was not able to reach the guy that would know if we need a permit for more than 10 vehicles). I will try to keep club members together best i can depending on the amount of recovery gear we have.

Stuff I recommend you bring for yourself and family, if they are coming:

-Food and Drinks
-Snow Boots (If you do not have snow boots I would bring and extra pair of socks and shoes)
-Two way radio (We will have a few people with radios, so at minimum we will have one leading the pack and one at the end of the pack) or CB radio
-Camera / Video Camera if desired
-A blanket (in case we get stranded)
-Recovery Gear
-Air Compressor to re-inflate your tires after the trail if you wish to deflate.

This ride is open to anyone that wants to go, just let us know!

I looked at the times again, and I won't be able to make it up there... We would have a 6am meet time, which makes it impossible for my family Plus, with the snow and ice, I don't think taking the fam up there will be a good idea this go-round. Sorry Reaper, looking forward to some spring time trail rides, however.

My goal is to be back in haymarket no later than 1730/530pm. If the conditions are to bad we will scratch it, takeover some dinner somewhere for an hour or so and then head home.

Group 1
Recovery Gear: PSP, come-along, tow strap, shovel, chain saw, snatch block, tire chains.
CB or Radio: Both. plus weather radio.
Winch Yes or No: Yes.
Any additional info you might think is important to pass on:
1) Assuming we make decent time I will head up to Reddish Knob and enjoy the view afterwards. Anyone who is not in a hurry is welcome to join me.
2) Bring a big Hefty trashbag with you & some work gloves. Last vehicle in each group polices up forest road-side trash. Bring a full bag back with you.
3) I will bring some extra FRMS radios.
4) Additional timings:
10:30 arrive Flagpole trailhead (Union Springs)
10:45 complete airdown & begin
3:00 p.m. complete trail (based on 5 mph average plus an hour for stops. Exit on Briery Branch Road. Trail length is about 15 miles. "The Stairs: are at about mile 9.
5) Navigation & Maps: If you have a GPS I can send you a GPX file with the path and waypoints. There are plenty of topo programs for iPhones. If anyone wants a PDF map PM me.
6) Bring your binos and camera.
7) If you plan on wheeling off of approved forest roads please don't.
8) Post-trail refuel: There are a couple of places to refuel on the way back. The closest point is about 10-15 miles down the road. Be sure to top off in Harrisonburg before beginning the ride.
7) This is a fun ride and probably the most popular wheeling road in the northern GWNF. A stream crossing. A technical rock stair. Good views. Don't worry about if you are stock.

Request for Springfield/Alexandria peeps: can we please meet up somewhere closer to the FFX Parkway if we're still meeting up earlier to head down to Haymarket together? Landmark is the wrong direction for me... lol
