I heard a group on Facebook all went out today said it was pretty ice they weren't able to make up to the stairs. Plus with the snow coming on Wednesday does anyone have any concerns? I never wheeled in snow before I from Florida, so mud the only thing I ever hit.

We plan on going, when we get to the trail we will check it. If its impassable we will turn back grab some food and head home. The last time I went up with a few guys it was pretty bad. Going up we were blazing about 3 inches of snow and then the switchbacks was nothing but ice, we made it through and didn't get stuck once.

I'm not going to be able to go (see previous post) but I will suggest that Fredericksburg people meet at the WaWa on Rt3 @ Carl D. Silver Parkway at 0645 with a departure time at 0700. "BigDaddyAt" can lead the carajeep to Harrisonburg. Have fun guys! See you on the next one!

Likewise, I'm going to pass on this one I guess. I really would still like to hit it, and would be fine living with the snow/ice or whatever, even just wasting a drive out and meeting some fellow Jeepers. That said, I don't think a long, slow, potential winchfest in the cold, with a possible abandonment altogether after a long drive, and waking them up super early is the best bet for a first time out for a 4 year old and a 7 year old. They'll never want to go again. If it were just me, I'd go no matter what, but mom works, so they'd have to come as well, and that just sounds like a bad idea. Even if it still sounds like alot of fun to me...

Obviously, I won't be able to lead the carajeep from the Fred. area. I think KG_Strummer hit the nail on the head for a meeting point/times (unless it is a large number, then you might want to switch it to a business that isn't open at that hour). Someone else hopefully can coordinate the FXBG contingent, and organize the line for the drive out to Harrisonburg.

Isn't it a little early to bail out? I'm waiting to make my call after the storm and a report from the ranger station...

And Noaa.gov says it's supposed to be 44f anf 49f Friday and Saturday. I think ice may not be an issue...it'll be mud from the snow melt.

Obviously, folks need to make their own safety calls but please reconsider bailing so early. I've been up and down these forest roads all winter including when it was snowing. Never once did I consider breaking out the chains or considered bailing. You just have to drive a little slower and be smooth. Unless you are coming from a great distance, I'd say to come on out. You can always turn back if it gets too dicey.

Just my opinion, but given the lack of any really technical public trails in Northern VA or the GWNF snow wheeling is the only interesting thing we can do.

My bailing has alot less to do with being concerned about the conditions and/or safety than it does it just not being a good shot to get my young boys into it with a definite good experience (given the relative mindset of 4 & 7 year old boys). If it were just me going, I'd see the potential for snowy trails as a plus to make it more fun...

Lol, yeah, I would give me a hard time too…. This was supposed to be a “buy in” trip for my fiancé, a chance to get her on the trail and see how fun it can be. I don’t want her to get a bad first impression because then it will never be a thing we both want to do, key to a good marriage I was told

Besides, we’re both pretty avid snowboarders and it’s a better bet for us to hit the slopes at whitetail and have a blast. Hopefully the roads are crappy and it will just be us and a handful of other people with high clearance 4x4s

I agree with BigDaddyAt, if it were just me the snow would just add some spice to the ride!

I may end up bailing as well, but will wait to make an informed decision...

I won't even bother trying to train mine...but a couple of boys should be easy enough, and maybe it'll just suck her in too

Hey Reaper,
mind sharing who you contact at the FS to ask about Flagpole? Since I'm retired, I've got the freedom to make trips up during the week when the trail is a lot less crowded. If you don't mind sharing the phone number, contact, that would be great. Wish you well on your trip this weekend. I'd love to go but I'll be taking my son and girlfriend to Springer Mountain, GA to start their thru-hike on the AT.

Snow wheeling = awesome.
Wheeling on ice, not so much.

yeah if it happens Im bailing out, I have seen some spots on the last ride where if were slick you would be sliding off the side of the mountain, so if it dumps on FP area then I and definitely out and would love to wheel another day and to hang with you guys!

I'm pretty sure I'm going out regardless. It may not be Flagpole but it will be somewhere with deep snow.

Hey guys,
I just want to let you know that I am following the weather for the area. I will be calling the Ranger Office in Harrisonburg 2-3 times a day on Thursday and Friday. I will be discussing the trip with them and a few of the guys I have wheeled with about going. Options I am considering (Depending on the turn out of the Storm).

Worst Case: Postpone the trip until the following Saturday 16 March.

Most Likely Case: Ride out to Harrisonburg, get to the trailhead, assess the trail and make a common sense decision. (If I think the trail is going to be impassable I will not attempt it.) That said, everyone is ultimately responsible for their own rigs and saftey. If you do not feel comfortable, nobody will pressure you to attempt it.

Best Case: The trail looks great and we have a blast!

Also there are a few different ways to get to flagpole, if needed we can cut the switchbacks completely out of the equation. Once we make it to flagpole, there is a short trip (around a mile) to a nearby road.

I just ask that everyone hold off on bowing out and wait until I can get a good trail report friday evening. I know its going to cut it close, but that is honestly the only way we are going to be able to get good information about the condition of the trail.

Are you by chance referring to the switchbacks going down to switzer lake?

Think it was pre mud flats area, and yes a few other switchbacks where there was about 2'-4' on real estate on either side of me before it drops

Yeah I was just trying to recall the drops. I didn't remember any coming up union springs. Now making the right to go down to switzer dam there was a lot.

Now, I will have to bow out as well. I have sumthin to cover now for wife...could say no, but then I will be in debt. Given the chance of having to cancel due to weather, I would rather not owe AND not get to wheel in the end. Guess I will just find a local snow pile. Stay safe. Hope to jump in next time.
