Dan, I'm still in and I have a friend coming from work. Kawa/Vance was still in. I think others as well. If you want to lead (I've only done FP once so I'm not comfortable leading) we could still do the meet up in Gainesville at 7:15. I think we were departing at 7:45 o meet anyone else in Harrisonburg then hit it.

We may want to go up the fire road from Briery Branch. That's supposed to be easier in bad conditions. Assuming its still bad.

Sounds good. This will be my third trip. Kawa is an expert on the area, so we should be good getting there. See ya'll in Gainesville.

Here are the details for our flagpole run on Saturday March 9th

From here on out please no more thread jacking, we can start another thread for people that want to discuss the trip or want to talk about other things.

For the people leaving from NOVA we will be group 1
For the people leaving from Fredericksburg area you will be group 2
For anyone else that is on the western side of Virginia you will be group 3 (You will meet us in Harrisonburg)

Groups 2+3 you will meet us at the sheetz located at
798 East Market Street, Harrisonburg, VA

If you are attending this trip please send a Reply with the following details:
Which Group you are part of
Recovery Gear
CB or Radio / Both / None
Winch Yes or No
Recovery Gear Type / Amount
Any additional info you might think is important to pass on.

Schedule

0715-0730am Meet up at
Sheetz
15315 Washington Street
Haymarket, VA
(From DC get off on Route 15. Stoplight make a left. Sheetz will be less than a mile on the left side.)

0745am Depart for Harrisonburg, Va (Route 33 West)

0915am Arrive in Harrisonburg, Va (Route 33 West)
Meet up with the guys coming from Richmond area.
Guys from Richmond will wait at the Sheetz located at
798 East Market Street, Harrisonburg, VA

I will lead group 1 across the street to a bigger parking lot (cant find the address to make it easy to locate). I will then head over to sheetz and grab the guys from group 2 and 3 and lead them to the bigger parking lot.

1000am Leave Harrisonburg, heading for the trailhead.

Trailhead Arrival: From here we will make stops as needed (depending on conditions).

Once I have a list of people coming I will break the entire group into smaller groups (Depending on the turn out, I was not able to reach the guy that would know if we need a permit for more than 10 vehicles). I will try to keep club members together best i can depending on the amount of recovery gear we have.

Stuff I recommend you bring for yourself and family, if they are coming:

-Food and Drinks
-Snow Boots (If you do not have snow boots I would bring and extra pair of socks and shoes)
-Two way radio (We will have a few people with radios, so at minimum we will have one leading the pack and one at the end of the pack) or CB radio
-Camera / Video Camera if desired
-A blanket (in case we get stranded)
-Recovery Gear
-Air Compressor to re-inflate your tires after the trail if you wish to deflate.

This ride is open to anyone that wants to go, just let us know!
The plan is above. See you in the AM.

Sorry to see you bail, Reaper but I understand.

I've lost track of who is going and who isn't. Danrb is going and I'm going so we have a quorum.

We'll just follow Reaper's operation order posted in #243 above.

Dan, I can take care of the navigation duties.

I'll be on CB Channel 4 and FRMS #4 while we are on the road. Call sign Baddo Daddo.

I've got the CB setup and will also have a radio. Call sign???? No one said anything about a call sign. My GMRS license has one, but it's not cool.

Anyone that will be at group 1 please take the time to let me know if you will be at the checkpoint at group 1. Being my first trip, I would hate to leave anyone behind.

Flagpole Knob trip 9 March 2013

I have a CB and two two-way radios as well so both Jeeps in my party will at least have two-ways.

I really want to go but I'm not driving over the mountain from central va alone. Not that big o' deal but I've only had my jeep for about a month and haven't driven that far with it. Plenty of wheeling local in our hunt club but not really that much of a road trip. Hate for something to happen and be stranded on road.

If you are talking about Peters Mill, isn't it still closed?

Peters Mill and Taskers Gap are both closed until the middle of March. But I can't find an exact date.

Just called the Exxon in Edinburg, OHV trails are closed and no other info available, other than opening later this month.

Peters Mill and Taksers gap are "closed from the third Monday in Jan to the third Monday in March" So I suppose it opens up on Tuesday March 19th. I am planning a trip for March 30th to hit Peters Mill and Taskers Gap. You can find my thread about it and let me know if you want to go.

Sounds good Smileguy, I'll check out your other thread.

Awesome day out, kinda bummed I didnt make it out there today but the smell of firing up the grill is helping

Anybody interested in running FP tomorrow? New to the area, but I've run it a few times and can lead. I've got CB, basic recovery gear, small lift and wheel/tire upgrade, reliable Jeep.

I'm writing this whilel enjoying a nice Guinness and listening to an Irish band at the Sugar Grove Navy base. It was a pretty good day today. There were 5 Jeeps in our little Flagpole expedition. The snow was about a foot deep and wet. It was hard going and slippery. We let another group pass us but we all ended turning back before the Mud Flats. I put chains on my rear tires but needed some on front tires as well. We picked up a Jeep from the other party and did Gephart Run and Old 33. It was probably only about a 7 mile run total but fun. I broke out the winch 3 times today. We had an interesting time getting around abandoned truck on Old 33 just before sunset. My steak is here so gotta sign off. -Kawa.

You forgot to mention that we discovered the forth rule of how to handle an obstacle. The broke truck was stuck in the middle of the road.

1. We couldn't go over it
2. We couldn't stradle it
3. We couldn't go around it.
4. So we moved it. Pretty funny, but six guys can pick up one of those small trucks and move.

Great trip all and all. Met some nice Jeapers. Dennis was fun. His first trip out and it was a tough one. I'm glad none of us slipped of the road. I know I had to fight it a couple times. Something about being on packed wet snow and a little bit off camber and a one foot snow embankment preventing you from going off the cliff made for some tense moments, but we all made it back and had fun. Thanks Kawa for the additional routes. I really liked Gephart run.

I must say. Thanks to you guys, I will have a story to tell for the rest of my life about how I beat the hell out of my new Jeep. This was definitely one of the most wild ( bka: emotional cocktail of fun, tense, scary, worried, wild, and more fun) experiences of my short life so far. I look plenty to wheeling with you guys again very soon!
