Hey everyone, planning a trip to flagpole knob on March 9th. Let me know if you want to come. There is a sheetz on rt 15 off 66. We will be meeting at 0715 and departing no later than 0745. I will post a trip and trail plan a few days prior to the trip when I know how many people will be attending.

I live near Harrisonburg, so I would meet you all up there, how long on the trail is it? I would have my young boys in my jeep with me and they max out at about 4 hours.
I am having a few things fixed on my Jeep and if I can get that stuff done before then I should be able to make it.

Hey Reaper, remember the guy we met last trip who said he got ticketed? I posted some info on the VAJeep Offroad site and got this reply. Be careful out there:

"Where we got ticketed was just before you hit the paved road. Maybe half a mile from the road that takes you out to Ottobine. Not real sure of that area. Anyway there is an obvious cut through on the trail. Six of us went through. All got tickets. No signs at the time. Now there is a sign hanging on a tree branch. Second area I know is an open area. There are some tank traps and that leads to another open meadow. Taking your vehicle up there is illegal. I saw it posted last time I was up there. I have been up through the tank traps and into that meadow in the past and it was not posted. I did not get ticketed there. Also there is a hill climb full of loose rocks. Tempting but also posted although you really wouldn't know until you got all the way up to see the sign. I am all for obeying posted signs and keeping out but if an area is not posted rangers should be a bit more lenient. It took me two years to go back up there. I have said it in the past but I feel we were bullied. Threatened with larger fines if we went to court and accused of tearing down signs that did not exist. Because of that I choose carefully where I want to wheel. I know shoe creek and bald mtn well enough to stay out of trouble and them typically wheel on private land to avoid overzealous law enforcement using their powers of enforcement and intimidation as a revenue source."

I'm sure the rocky hill climb he mentions is at the start of the trail where we normally air down, but the open meadow he describes sounds like the cut off the trail to Flagpole Knb itself. Has this been declared off limits??
When we ran into this guy, it was after Meadow Knob but before Flagpole. Any ideas???

Ok, I talked with the North River Rangers District (Responsible for Flagpole Knob and surrounding area). Me and a few others are going to head down there and have a sit down with them to see how we can help them and hopefully how they can help us offroaders. I will have a copy of the MVUM and we will follow that as best we can with the trails considered off limits not having signs. That brings me to my next point, If you go out to George Washington National Forest to offroad please do not destroy the signs that they put up. It is going to cause us to lose the privilege to use this land. If you see anyone else out there destroying the signs please take down their license plate number and inform the Rangers office of what you seen. If you cant find the number for them please contact me and I will get you in touch with them.

Also talking with the rangers, if we have more than 10 vehicles then we will need to get a special permit. I will be calling the gentleman in charge of that area to get the exact information. If it cost money, we will split into groups and find a center point for us to meet at as an entire group.

Ill will post again tomorrow with the information i receive. Please do not let this deter you from joining us. I promise you that I will do everything in my power to properly inform you on what is off limits and make it as enjoyable as possible.

Awesome ideas! I've never been out there, but I'm one of the guys KG Strummer is bringing along. Just got my 2000 in October, so this will be my first real outing (which means I won't be much help in the knowledge dept. of course). If I had known what a great community surrounded having a Jeep, I would have bought one years ago... :)

I will add my info to the list. I will be wheeling my 08 JKU Sahara bone stock (it did come with a few skid plates so that is a plus). I do have some recovery gear (tow strap, comealong, shovel, ect). I have wheeled Peters Mill and Taskers a few times but this will be my first trip to Flagpole.

I am excited to get out with a large group. Reaper thanks for talking to the rangers for us all, I too want to do this legally to make up for all those few who give us Jeepers a bad name. If there is anything I can do to help PM me. Thanks!

I have a winch and some recovery gear, but this will be my first real outing with my new rig as well, so I don't know the trail(s) there at all. All of my previous wheeling in my older Jeeps was very easy stuff. I know that Flagpole isn't difficult at all, but I definitely hope we have a few more experienced folks going who can lead, spot, and supervise recoveries...
