Flagpole Knob trip 9 March 2013

Hey everyone, planning a trip to flagpole knob on March 9th. Let me know if you want to come. There is a sheetz on rt 15 off 66. We will be meeting at 0715 and departing no later than 0745. I will post a trip and trail plan a few days prior to the trip when I know how many people will be attending.

I live near Harrisonburg, so I would meet you all up there, how long on the trail is it? I would have my young boys in my jeep with me and they max out at about 4 hours.
I am having a few things fixed on my Jeep and if I can get that stuff done before then I should be able to make it.

Thanks for the offer, but, unless you know how to weld, I'm getting my C gussets and front LCA skids welded and getting my pinch seam trimmed this weekend . Hopefully I'll have my new tires and 35s mounted tomorrow and alignment on Monday.

Where you mounting your CB? Where you located? I might be able to help out this weekend!

Hey Reaper, remember the guy we met last trip who said he got ticketed? I posted some info on the VAJeep Offroad site and got this reply. Be careful out there:

"Where we got ticketed was just before you hit the paved road. Maybe half a mile from the road that takes you out to Ottobine. Not real sure of that area. Anyway there is an obvious cut through on the trail. Six of us went through. All got tickets. No signs at the time. Now there is a sign hanging on a tree branch. Second area I know is an open area. There are some tank traps and that leads to another open meadow. Taking your vehicle up there is illegal. I saw it posted last time I was up there. I have been up through the tank traps and into that meadow in the past and it was not posted. I did not get ticketed there. Also there is a hill climb full of loose rocks. Tempting but also posted although you really wouldn't know until you got all the way up to see the sign. I am all for obeying posted signs and keeping out but if an area is not posted rangers should be a bit more lenient. It took me two years to go back up there. I have said it in the past but I feel we were bullied. Threatened with larger fines if we went to court and accused of tearing down signs that did not exist. Because of that I choose carefully where I want to wheel. I know shoe creek and bald mtn well enough to stay out of trouble and them typically wheel on private land to avoid overzealous law enforcement using their powers of enforcement and intimidation as a revenue source."

I have a buyer lined up... hopefully all goes well tomorrow.

UPS damaged two of my wheels last week so I've been waiting for the replacements.

I'm sure the rocky hill climb he mentions is at the start of the trail where we normally air down, but the open meadow he describes sounds like the cut off the trail to Flagpole Knb itself. Has this been declared off limits??
When we ran into this guy, it was after Meadow Knob but before Flagpole. Any ideas???

It sounds like the route we took into flagpole is considered off limits. I will talk with the rangers office to figure out what is and isn't off limits. I think I might try to do a site survey with them and take donations so we can properly mark these trails since we are the ones that use them.

got any more details? where exactly?

type this in google maps:

38.488415,-79.216597

that is the only "meadow" that close to the paved road that goes to briery branch.
i've camped there a dozen times, had forest service check up on us, chat for a while, etc... never got a ticket. never seen a sign until you get farther up by the campsites at that spot. then there are tank traps / signs.

Thanks... I'm up for donating. Also, you wanna make a list so we don't get too many rigs? May have to make 2 groups if there are too many of us.

Great idea! I won't be able to make it on the 9th since I'll be taking my son and his girlfriend to Georgia to start their hike on the AT, but I'm available after that if we do a "marking" trip. Being retired has its benefits!!

Thanks for sharing that. I'm curious as to how active FS law enforcement is in the GWNF. I have probably close to 1000 miles of driving within the GWNF since the beginning of the year. In all those miles I have only seen The Man once. As it turned out, I followed him up Long Run road and witnessed him pull over and write equipment citations to a pack of wheelers coming down from Clines Hacking. See this link Panoramio - Photo of Forest Service Law Enforcement.

Regarding posted areas. If you wheel in any National Forest, the Motor Vehicle Usage Map (MVUM) needs to be our bible. The Forest Service has it set up such that the MVUM is authoritative over any signs (or lack thereof). If it's not listed as open in the MVUM it is off limits and it is the drivers responsibility to know. All of Flagpole's little side trails that aren't in the MVUM as open will get us into trouble.

We really do need to work with the Forest Service to set up "skills areas" at intervals along popular wheeling routes that we maintain and allow us to knock ourselves out. This is pretty common in the mountain biking community.
