I'm in. There's a good chance my son will ride along with me. We plan to stay the night down there, camp somewhere and do Second Mountain or something the next day.
I have a CB. My call sign is SCUD. I'll be on channel 4.
I'll have some basic recovery gear; shovel, rope, come-along, saw, tire chains.
I may meet you down at the Harrisonburg Sheetz vs. the one in Haymarket. If anyone knows of a good place to get breakfast in Harrisonburg let me know. The greasier the better.

Questions:
1. Typically, how long does it take to do this trail? I ask because sunset is at 5:15 PM. When it can helped I try to leave 2 hours of daylight as a safety margin.
2. Is this a point to point drive or are we doing up and back?
3. Is there a suggested tire pressure for this trail?

1. I am unsure of how long the trail will take, as it sits right now without seeing it, it is possible that all the trails up there may be impassable after todays and tonights snow fall. Worst case we drive to peters mill and taskers gap (Not difficult but fun).
2. You can do either, I was going to wait to see what the group wanted to do after we completed the trail.
3. From what I have been told, you do not need to air down. It is just recommended to make the ride less bouncy.

Anyone out there that can't make it Saturday feeling adventurous for Sunday or Monday? Would love to get out there Sat, but obligations prevent me. But Sunday and Monday are looking good. Would love to meet up and do flagpole run if possible?

Also if you have a handheld 2 way radio you should bring it. I would say most of us don't have CB radios

Thanks to the snow last night we are planning on doing a Flagpole run TODAY Fri 18th if anyone wants to go. I have a couple of people now, but we were hoping to find 2-3 more rigs. The high today out there is 40 and 50 tomorrow... There be nothing but slush tomorrow

I called the North River Ranger District and they said that they didnt get any snow yesterday or last night. So I think tomorrow is going to be perfect! If you go today good luck and have fun!

Jan 19th Schedule (Update)

Here are the details for our flagpole run on Saturday Jan 19th (NOVA Guys)

Schedule

10:00am Meet up at
Sheetz
15315 Washington Street
Haymarket, VA
(From DC get off on Route 15. Stoplight make a left. Sheetz will be less than a mile on the left side.)

10:30am Leave for Harrisonburg, Va (Route 33 West)

12:00pm Arrive in Harrisonburg, Va (Route 33 West)
Meet up with the guys coming from Richmond area.

12:30pm Leave Harrisonburg, heading for the trailhead. (Unsure of exact time to the trailhead, guessing about 30 mins)

Trailhead Arrival: From here we will make stops as needed (depending on conditions). I have called Harrisonburg district office for GWNF and the gentleman told me that we do not need a permit.

Stuff I recommend you bring for yourself and family, if they are coming:

-Food and Drinks
-Snow Boots (If you do not have snow boots I would bring and extra pair of socks and shoes)
-Two way radio (We will have a few people with radios, so at minimum we will have one leading the pack and one at the end of the pack)
-Camera / Video Camera if desired
-A blanket (in case we get stranded)
-Recovery Gear (A couple of guys have everything we would need, but from what I am told, you can never have to much recovery gear.)

I will update the current list of people that have said they are coming tomorrow morning when I read back through the forum.

For the Richmond guys, I am not sure how you want to work it out on your end. If anyone wants to take charge for your group coming up please let the guys know. We will be at the Sheetz in Harrisonburg, Va around 12pm. The address is:
798 East Market Street, Harrisonburg, VA

Who ever wants to take lead let me know so I can get you my cell phone number so you can call me if you encounter any issues.

This ride is open to anyone that wants to go, just let us know!
Alright guys and gals, I talked to the Rangers Office in Harrisonburg and they said that they didnt get any snow. So we will be going to flagpole. If for any reason the trail is impassable we will go to Peter's Mill Run and Tasker's Gap (about a half hour north of Harrisonburg).

As for who is coming:

The list of people that has stated they are coming:
Reaper2332 (Jason)
firefox2501 (Mike)
Danrb (Dan)
KG_Strummer
NavyDemon
kawa001 (Vance)
sgtkersh (Mark)
KareyfayinVA (Mike and Karen)
EricsRubi (Assuming Eric)

There's also a few guys down in the Richmond area that may be coming along.
TRM627 will not be able to make it, but said he has 3 friends also wanting to make the trip. I am waiting on a response to see if his friends are still making the trip.

GO PREPARED!!!! Extra food, tools, recovery gear, blankets.... I know the ranger station said they don't have any snow, but they are a couple thousand feet below Flagpole, and half of that mountain never gets any sun in the winter time.... Had a group from NOVA Jeepers get stuck doing over 100 winch pulls last time, and didn't get off the mountain till after 2am... We're all big boys and girls here, just making sure everybody is ready...

I always go prepared. And will turn around if in trouble. Didn't the storm hit while you were going up? Tomorrow the temp when we start will be in the 50s. If snow was predicted, I'd probably skip this one.

Common sense is always the best preparation.

What's everyone thoughts on a stock Yukon making it up Flagpole? I've been up in the area of Reddish knob on my motorcycle, but Reddish is a more developed road and was dirt and gravel.

I am hitting Peters Mill Run and Taskers Gap in the morning (Sat 19th). I will be at the trail head at 10:00 AM if anyone wants to meet up. For those who have never been, Peters mill run is pretty easy (stock friendly) but is still very fun. Let me know if you are interested in going.

Happy Trails!

I have read some people say a stock jeep can make it fine, others say no, can anyone clarify this for me? I have an 08 Unlimited Sahara completely stock including tires, Do you think I could make it without killing my jeep?

I've heard that any stock Jeep can do the trail, but there are some off shoots that are more challenging that a sticker may not be able to do. I van let you know tomorrow after we go.

Flagpole Run (Sat 19th Jan)

Is the seven hours from the start in Haymarket? This is our first time so I want to set expectations with the family.

7 Hours from Haymarket? And the drive from Haymarket to Harrisonburg is about 1.5 hours each way? So on the trail time of around 4 hours or so?

Assuming a 1 p.m. start time that gets us off the trail about sunset then. Bring your Petzls or Black Diamonds just in case.
