GW National forest

Hey all,

I was looking to see if anyone knew if George Washington national forest has re-opened to wheeling. My friends and I used to go through Harrisonburg to get to the trails, but a few years back there were road blocks put up with no trespassing signs. I heard that the trails were open again but it was from an unreliable source. So does anyone really know if those trails are open for wheeling?

We've been up there a few times. We go to Flag Pole and Peter's mill run.

With the exception of certain seasonal roads like Peters Mill/Taskers Gap, Potts Mountain, Stateline, etc, all GWNF roads are open year round. Flagpole, for example, does not close. The Nat Geo Trails Illustrated map does a pretty decent job of showing seasonal roads.

That said, the FS has permenantly closed many of the old favorites like Dry Run and the technical section of Dictum Ridge.

I think Shoe Creek is harder than Flagpole. Not a lot of mud but several stream crossings, lots of rocks and wash outs. Also a lot of little quick shoots off the trail to make things interesting. It can be done with a stock rig with some care. Not as pretty as Flagpole but I think it's a small step up. Photos on my Facebook page (Doug-Sarah Howell)

All the good mud spot have been shut down permently like salt shed and dry run. But the main road that runs from 33w thru to reddish knob are still open. Even though it is still technically illegal to go off of that rd thru and of the turn arounds/mud. But that's only if someone's looking

If you do get caught its a $175 fine. Also I was talking with the ranger for the flagpole district and he said if people keep going where they are not supposed to be they arw going to shut it down. Not to be a debbie downer but I enjoy going out there as well as numerous others so we need to pass the word so they don't shut it down.

Well that wouldn't be cool at all. that's like the only thing fun around here to do. I know about the tickets cause a couple people I've went with have gotten them.

I suspect our continued access to those roads is tenuous at best.
