Norfolk

Any of you live in Norfolk ? My son is getting married and moving down there next month. His soon to be wife is in the Navy and stationed there with 3 years to go. He is moving down there and transferring his job at Krogers and college there. They are looking at apartments now and Im trying to tell them to find something close to base where other folks in the Navy are so they can help lookout for them. Anyone have any opinions or suggestions on where is a good place to live ? He is a country kid that has never lived in town let alone a city. I think he is going to need some friends. He has a 2000 TJ that is his DD and wants to do some wheeling on the beach or mild trails.

Norfolk

I live in Norfolk, have lived here (except for active Army service) since 1954 when my Navy father was transferred here. The Norfolk Naval complex is the largest military installation in the free world, so I would have to know exactly where your son will be located on it to know what rental property is near him.

There are off-station military housing located just outside the Naval Station, Naval Air Station, Navy Amphibious Base, and Naval Support Activity. There are civilian rental properties located all over Norfolk that welcom military personnel, many within bicycle range, much less Jeep range, of the various Naval installations.

I believe that you also mentioned educational institutions. Old Dominion University (my alma mater) is a few miles north of the Naval Station Main Gate on Hampton Blvd. There are numerous schools that teach extension courses on base (how I earned my Master's) and at various locations in town.

As for off-roading in the area, I am afraid that (except for military duty) I cannot help -- I have had my Jeep for only three days and have just joined WF to find off-roading opportunities myself.

Please contact me directly if you wish me to develop more specific data on rental or educational opportunities for your son.

Close to base isn't always a good thing. I don't know about Navy bases but often times the areas right outside of AF bases are dumps/ghettos. Better to live 15-20 mins away in a nicer area.

I used to live right outside Gate 4 at NOB and hearing gunshots was kind of a normal thing. IMO the best place would be as stated above 15-20 min out from the base. Depending on what time you leave you can even make it to NOB in about 30 min coming from Chesapeake and there are quite a few places out that way that are good. When I got out I moved to the Kempsville area and it's about 20 min from base and is a great area.

Thanks guys. They found a nice place in Virginia Beach area just off 264 in Thalia gardens next to the town center. They figured out quick the closer to base the worse the area was for crime.Hes a country boy living smack in the middle of the city so not sure how hes going to like it just yet.He will be looking to go to OBX in the TJ soon Im sure but nothing serious as his wrenching skills are not that great and good ole dad is a long ways away to help fix anything.I think he has decided to switch his school over to online classes as its possible she may get deployed or transferred in the spring .

If he's looking for friends amongst the jeep community look up some of the clubs available. There are so many jeep clubs here in the Virginia beach/ Norfolk are it will make your head spin.
