UPDATE:
looks like the trail is about 3.5 hours from where we are leaving from.
I looked up the food lion and it seems the one in Lovingston is the one on the way.
The address is: Food Lion, Callohill Drive, Lovingston, VA
We hope to be at the food lion around 8:30- 9:00 AM at the very latest. Google says the foodlion is approx. 37 minutes from the trail head so hopefully after the meet and greet we will be there no later than 9:45.

You guys still planning on coming?

I'm still planning on coming. But won't know for sure till we get back from our honeymoon on Wednesday. My wife has to check her schedule. But i should let you guys know no later than Thursday if i can make it.

How long does the trail take? And has anyone checked for sure to make sure it isn't closed?

Oh another question! Do we need to get a park pass or anything for this trail?

You're welcome to come and meet us up at the previously mentioned food lion in lovingston. The more the merrier!

Yep just realized the post up there didn't actually include the address for the Foodlion! lets try this again. (not that you guys aren't smart enough to look it up yourself.)

Coming from Christiansburg he would cut through Amherst and not come all the way to Livingston. The GPS coordinates should take you straight to the creepy house.

Just to be sure, it looks like this takes me to the trailhead on RT 827 (Perkins Mill Rd) near Alhambra. Someone told me there were 2 entrances to Shoe Creek and I want to be at the right one.

There will be a lot of us to meet! a lot!! our line will be headed up by a red TJ. If the guy actually wakes up on time there may be an FJ mixed in and also a tacoma. but all the rest are jeeps. It should be a great time! Don't forget to bring some food and drinks for lunch.

and yes hopefully we will be there around 9:30-9:45 but you never know what might cause delays on the drive!

Potts is going to be closed until either the FS clears the blow downs or someone hikes in there with a chain saw and does it. You are probably looking at now earlier than 4/15.

Great - I look forward to the trip. If my CB is working I'm usually on channel 4 for trail rides. See you there.

Directly from the district ranger station this afternoon at 4:15 p.m. They haven't posted the closure on the FS website. I'm also in contact with a wheeler on the Cherokee forum who will be taking the one of the rangers up next week to survey the winter trail damage.

Ditto. The problem is that for Potts the gate is locked. You'd have to hike or bike in.

One thing about using a chainsaw in the GWNF. You either need to have a wood cutters permit or be a trained volunteer with a signed liability waiver. I went the permit route.

I'm pretty excited about going, too. Fortunately, I'll go with Plan B (Rausch Creek) for this weekend.

A CB was my very first mod to my Jeep but I rarely use it. FRMS is more cost effective.

Yeah we like them because we always have different groups of vehicles coming with us, and we don't have to worry about communication between vehicles as we have like 6 sets of radios that we just pass around.

Were about it rausch creek at. Is it close to potts, if so we may do that instead, and is it comparable to potts, or is it easier harder, what's it like never been there

Well dang. And just an update on it I just got off the phone with the ranger station and they said, its still closed because of downed trees blocking the trail. The lady I talked to said that they were working with local offroad clubs to get it cleaned up as soon as possible. She said it may be open by the 13 depending on how bad it is. I wish I lived closer so I could get up there to help with the clean up on days that I'm off. If anyone hears anything else keep us posted, hopefully it isn't that bad and it will get cleaned up.
