Upcoming Wheeling Opportunities

Upcoming events that I'm aware of...

8/3 NOVA Jeepers Camp Heep @ Rausch Creek, PA (members event)
8/17/-18 Big Dogs Summer Slam @ The Cove, Gore, VA
9/13-14 Big Dogs Main Jambo @ The Cove, Gore, VA
9/19-22 Oak Ridge Estates Annual Trail Ride
In October I'm thinking about organizing an orienteering style tour of the northern GWNF.

How come I haven't seen many trail rides on the forum during the summer? It seems like every other weekend during the winter someone wanted to go out.

I would blame the heat and humidity.

OCC had an event at the cove last weekend and the email box was blowing up with cancellations citing the heat and humidity.

That being said I'm looking forward to the fall and doing some wheeling. Especially Kawa's orienteering at GWNF...that sounds cool.

Yep, I was there both days with OCC and it was warm and humid. That's why I love my hardtop. Turn the AC and a get a cool breeze going even with the windows down.

The wheels are turning on the GWNF orienteering. I'm bouncing some ideas off my motorcycle riding counterpart. A couple of things that I have to work through:
1. Avoid turning this into a full on organized event because that would require a permit. I believe 10 or more vehicles also require a permit in the GWNF.
2. There are more forest roads in the northern GWNF than one can do in a weekend. I'll need to narrow it down to the very best.
3. Whether it will be possible to gather everyone up at a common location for a collective Saturday night camp & fire or does everyone just fend for themselves? I do have a venue in mind.
4. How to incorporate a public service or charitable org into this, if possible.
5. Make people comfortable with wheeling, navigating and decision making either solo or in very small groups. My observations are that one or two people do the trip organizing and everyone just sort of comes along for the ride. There's nothing wrong with that (and I've done it, too) but the goal of this event/non-event would be for folks to make their own route selections and choices.

GWNF tour

Hey Kawa, I read through your earlier posts about your own GWNF tour and I saw the maps, and see you're thinking about taking some folks out. Sounds great. My question is whether stocks trucks will be able to make the trip? And non-Jeeps (sacrilege I know)? I'm in a 2000 4runner stock but I'm adventurous. Either way it sounds like a great trip and thanks for the time you've put into your research and willingness to share.

Yes to both.

I just took on a new project at work that's consuming my nights and weekends. I'm hoping to do this Nov 9-11 (Veterans Day weekend). I would like to do the orienteering style but I may just run it as a group ride open to any and all.
