Forrest just came to pick up the drive shaft and convinced me to get a CB before the trip, so I'm looking at some online right now. Came on here to research some antennas. I've never set one up, so I'd need help there. I guess that's where the SWR meter comes in.

Any recommendations? Forrest recommended the Uniden Pro510. It gets good reviews and it's cheap...I like cheap . Any antenna recommendations? Keep in mind, I have no clue about these things and I've never used a CB that wasn't set up already.

You must of skipped the last couple post.

I have a spare Uniden 510 pro XL. Come and get it. Hell I'll hook it up and tune it too. Just need a coax and whip. There is a nice selection at the radio shack in Derby for coax and whips. They have half the store set up just for cb's.

Get the Wilson Flex antenna. It is $25 bucks and hopefully should be the last antenna you ever buy. They have coax there too. But buy an extra end that you solder on so we can shorten the length of your coax. Between the 4 of us we can get it done!

I don't have a CB. Probably won't have time to appropriate the funds for one in time since I'm trying to get some front hooks figured out so I can be saved when I get stuck lol. I'll look around and see what I can find though if the borrowed ones are spoken for.

I need to go for a run but other than that, Saturday is clear for me. Will Radio Shack have the antenna?

Pretty sure Saturday is cool with me. Depends on the weather but I think I have a front 60 set of knuckles and high steer arms to replace. Either is fine.

I'll probably head over Friday after I pick the boys up from school and camp overnight so I won't have to get up super early to drive out.

I think I lost your number. I just checked my PM's and must have deleted it. I'm free all day Saturday as well. How much coax will I need? I've got to go to Derby tomorrow anyways, so I can pick up whatever I'll need.

Depends on where you want your coax. I have my antenna on the driver's side A frame. I need less than 4' of coax. If you want it on the rear bumper get 18' and we can trim it down.

From what I remember they just sell coax cable by the foot. You need an antenna stud.

Firestik - K4A - Stud Mount PL259 Screw-On Connection - Electronics Superstore www.WalcottCB.com

and one weld on mount.

you have pm with number.

as for the coax. depends...where do you want to mount the cb and the antenna?

regardless you can just get a 18ft coax and have plenty. We are going to cut it to length anyhow. Have to cut one end off your run it through what ever you want to mount it.

so...how you mount the antenna will depend on some parts you need from the store. I.E...cb antenna through adapter....coax end...for the one we cut off. etc.

Hmmm, no PM showing up. If it wouldn't be too much trouble for you, I'd appreciate the help in getting the right parts. I get off at 4pm, so whatever is convenient for you. As for mounting options, I've never had a CB so I don't have a preference. I'll take recommendations!

Would RG6 coaxial cable work? If so, I have a ton you can have. If I remember correctly though, CB coax is skinnier more like the plastic inside that surrounds the conductor on RG6.

I like two ways really...the way I have mine and the fender mount option such as Mr. C had on a privious jeep.

Mine...run the coax through where the third brake light wires went and use a piece of angle iron to make a mount using factory wholes in the tailgate to bolt the mount too. I used the top three holes but you can use one or tow of them.....cheap and very simple.

the fender mount option is a simple mount that bolts anywhere you want just have to drill a hole in the sheet metal somewhere on the jeep. The fender make a nice location as does the back corner of the tub. the mount can be picked up at the radio store.

I think I like the way you have it. I'm not a huge fan or drilling extra holes. Putting on the rocker guards was torture...lots of holes. I still have no PM from you with your number. I'll send you my number, just give me a call when it's good for you Friday or we can just meet somewhere after 4pm. Let me know what works for you.

it's just sheet metal.

Just meet me at V-OPS building 706 when you get off. My jeep will be parked in the lot.

I'm going to get a dirtworx bumper but the lead times are pretty long. You think these hooks New Jeep Wrangler TJ 97 & UP Front Tow Hook Black Pair : eBay Motors (item 370345066656 end time Apr-04-10 11:58:57 PDT) would be worth the money because the bumper won't be here in time or would you stay stock and hope for the best? All I have right now are 2 hooks in the rear.

On my last jeep I made a bracket that bolts up like the mirror movers.

On this jeep it had a set of mirror movers on it already. So I cut it up and drilled a hole for the antenna mount. I didn't have to drill any extra holes. I like this location because if you see a huge tree coming you can pull the antenna down out of the way.

I have a set of hooks in the garage that you can have. They aren't like the OEM hooks. They have a better hook to help keep the strap in place. You will need some new bolts that are longer. Take the stock bolt out and match up some new grade 8s that are 1.25"-1.5" longer.

Sweet! I could even get them back to you when my bumper arrives! I didn't want to get stranded in a mudhole

Might as well. That's the main reason for the new bumper anyway.

This totally sounds like a sweet deal, I found one of my buddies who will let me borrow his tent, and tomorrow I'm going to make sure I can get off work.... if that works out I'm in. Never been on a wheeling trip so I'm pretty stoked... I also don't have a cb installed, how crappy will a handheld cb work?? or should I just bite the bullet buy one install it, and have you guys do the whole SWR magic for me, since i have know idea what that is.

Hand helds are alright but their volume and range are very limited. A CB is really up to you. When we go wheelin it is really nice to be able to communicate without screaming. Most of the time when we go there is a caravan of rigs. We talk almost the whole way up there and back.

But, I only use my CB when I go wheelin.
