I recently read a story of a man that found a company that produces a header for the 2.5 Jeep Wrangler motor and he also provided this companies web site.
Has anyone ever tried it and if so did it boost up there horsepower and give better MPG. My 94 model is struggling for power. Someone told me you could change the chip, remove the piece of plastic in the air intake, run hotter plugs and a few more things and you could gain a substantial amount of Horsepower and really increase your MPG. I would hope so because my Jeep doesn't have enough HP to pull a string out of a cats rump and only gets about 11 MPG. I have a friend that has the same year and everything as mine and he get between 18-21 depending on if it's local or on a trip. What say you |

I say go for the tune up and remove the air restrictor, SLR makes a chip that I know works a little for mileage, though nowhere remotely close to their claims. Better than stock exhaust will probably give you a little more, including headers. Clean the sludge out of under the vavle cover, and replace the gasket, make sure your thermostat is running where it should...that's about all I've got.

An interesting thread since this is the next project on my list. What is the piece of plastic being referred to in the air intake that restricts air flow?

In my 94 2.5, it was quite simple, and it was even more simple in my cousins 95 cherokee 4.0L. Remove the hoses attached to the top of the air filter box. In the short outlet tube on the top that attatches the main hose (The one that goes to the throttle body) there is a restrictor. Use a flathead screwdriver to push in the clips in the side of the air filter box's top, and use pliers to pull out the restrictor. The tune up is just basic...plugs, wires, etc. And that was a good suggestion as well, a few above me- Check out how your catalytic converter is. Mine is a brand new magnaflow one, plus a dynomax super turbo cat-back...But I still get probably less than 14 miles a gallon, Significantly so. But, it's definately a lot better since putting the new cat on.

They do run alot better without the Cat. I think mine is already been removed and it's still drinking the fuel. Maybe 11MPG.

You can figure out MPG even without a fuel gauge. (In fact, the fuel gauge isnt used in mpg calculations) Fill your tank 100% full with fuel. Before you leave the gas station, reset the tripometer to zero. (Thats the smaller "odometer" on the speedo. Reset by twisting or turning the post sticking out of your speedo face) The next time you return to the gas station for fuel, fill it up 100% again. Now look at the number of gallons of fuel you just filled and the number on your tripometer. Miles per gallon is really Miles/gallon, so take the tripometer number and divide it be the number of gallons you just put in the tank. Example: 337 miles on the tripometer, filled up by putting 14.34 gallons in the tank, so - 337/14.34 = 23.50 miles per gallon Keep in mind, this WONT be accurate if your speedo is off, since the speedo is what makes the tripometer work. |

I would go with new plugs (The e3 plugs are geat), a good set of plug wires, a k&n or at least a replacable filter and REMOVE THAT RESTRICTOR!. As with all engines, make sure they can breathe and fart....lol....make sure the exhaust is as free flowing as possible and make sure the intake is, too. The colder the air in the intake and the smoother the route, the better. Cap/Rotor replacement are good, too.
Realistically, you MIGHT get 4 mpg from doing all these things, though. |

It's usually better to use the same gas station & same pump, as (just like Jeeps) every one is a little different.

If you calculate your mileage regularly in this manner, you'll get a good sense of how you're doing. Every fill up is going to vary slightly, and your driving is going to affect the mileage more than you might think. My mileage defintiely is down a few MPG when I take a lot of short trips around town, and is also up a few when I ride on the HWY at 60 or less. Pushing it past 65MPH also definitely results in measurably reduced MPG. You can feel the air pile up in front of the rig pushing back, and the amount of noise just doubles or more. The fueld guage is not particularly helpful, as it only is accurate at full and empty in mine. In between is a guessing game, and hills, accelleration and deccelleration all make it go up and down accordingly.
