5 speed manual transmission identification

I have a 1998 yj with a 4.2 and a 5 speed manual transmission. I want to do a fluid change because it shifts very hard when it is cold outside.(it came from Arizona so the previous owner may have put heavy oil in it). My Chiltons manual shows different oil for different trannys. What is the best way to identify my tranny? Thanks for any help!!!

If you look in your Chilton's in the transmission section, it should show where the identification number is. Short of that, the stock manual transmission is, I'm guessing, an AX15. If you google that, you will see pictures of it. They should match yours.

As an example, my 92 has an AX5 in it (four cylinder). I got an AX5 out of a 2000 TJ to replace the one in mine. They were identical. Swapped over the bell housing from the 92 and it bolted up and worked like a champ.

You may have the BA10/5 transmission. I think that was the stock transmission until later on in 1989 (AX15 may not have been installed until 1990 even). I would double check to be sure. If the transmission case can be opened lenthwise it is a BA10.

If it is stock then they can look it up by VIN. But yah, it wouldn't hurt to visually check too.
