Stock Jeep width or stock stock? It not really worth the effort to cut it down in size since you will more than likely be running a much bigger tire and you will need the stability from it. There is a very good write up on Pirate on cutting one down.

I am in the process of narrowing a set of Dana 60's. I called the guys at Genright Offroad and they recommended narrowing them to 65" wheel mounting surface to wheel mounting surface. These guys run 40's or 42's on almost all of their rigs and they said this width allows this size of tires without interferance from the body, steering, etc., and is the perfect width for lateral stability. They run 3.5-inch backspacing on their wheels with this set-up.

What is even more amazing is that they run these tires with only 4-inches of lift. The difference is the body panels they sell that allow more clearance.

Good luck!
