I have beaten the disease known as death wobble. My YJ would do it everytime that I hit 62 mph so 60 was the fastest that I could go. I replaced the steering stabalizer and that didnt change anything. Put the Jeep on a lift and checked over the whole under carriage and nothing seemed to be wrong.
As a final resort, I bought 4 brand new tires even though my old ones weren't completely worn yet. Took it for a test drive and it's fixed! Been running on the new tires for 2 months now and no more death wobble. |

I'm getting a similar 'vibration' at about 65 MPH. First I'm gonna get the wheels balanced & go from there.

i've also heard that there are some grease bolts under the axle that if greased will resolve the problem.

Did ya not read the link?
Basically what happens is the axle hops somewhat like axle wrap. And when this happens at speed 50-60mph or faster, it can be scary and even cause an accident.

shit never mind sorry I didnt notice the link
![]() Im guessing stress on the axels and steering system while offroading can cause this pretty easily |

worn out balljoints and other suspension components, yes... but the main culprit is usually a lose track bar, allowing the axle to move side to side under the vehicle.

Best friend had this happen to his YJ and all it was, was a bent rim. Got four new rims and hasn't done it since

Any kind of all-terrain would be best.

i purchased my 92 sahara in august 2006 and the wobble has been a problem since, until recently. first i balanced tires, bought new rims, new motor mounts, transmission mounts, installed 4" lift(not to solve wobble), new 34 tires(that never would bal to zero), another new set of 35 tires(wich helped), But the wobble didnt disappear until i changed the u joints about a month ago. it was great for about a week until the u joints started to wear! yes, after a week! I was in a bind and had to purchase from local parts store. i plan to change these soon. does anyone have suggestions? It was a dream come true for about a week! still not bad until about 70 to 75 mph.

Check ur U joints and maybe re-torque ur suspension. mine had a DW and it was bc of rear leafs were so loose there was a gap between nut and shackle EEEEk

I have found that ball joints usually are the culprit. That and unbalanced tires.

I just bought my second Jeep, a '88 Sahara. I used to have a '95, but I never experienced death wobble in it. I didn't even get my Sahara all the way home before it wobbled hard twice on the interstate at 75mph. I had skid marks in my shorts when I got home. At least after reading this thread I know where to start, but it looks like it could be a long and expensive road...

I had the DW on my '90 YJ, got to the point I didn't want my kids in the Jeep. Started asking around 'cause I was at a point of being stumped. Nothing we did was working. Tires looked good, everything checked out. A week later, replaced the tires and noticed that 3 out of the 4 had bubbles in the tread. I'd already lost one tire 2 months before to a blowout, but at that time the others checked out fine.

on a yj it is alot easiear to diagnose........9 times out of 10 it is out of balance tires. next it will be either ball joints or unit bearings.....rarely do bad tie rod ends cause this....track bar bushings shouldnt matter on a yj b/c we run em with out em at 65 and get no death wobble....im not saying that its not possible im just saying its unlikely......in a coils sprung vehichle the death wobble can be a result of about 30 different things.......and to those who are asking what the death wobble is.....u have to experience it to know it....if it is a vibration then that is not it.....the death wobble iss called the death wobble b/c it is very very scary

It makes me chuckle looking back on now, I remember only one thought bringing the jeep to a halt as I clutched the steering wheel with a death grip.

Yes, death wobble WILL make you sh!t yourself. I've experienced it once when I had the 38's on my jeep. I actually saw an XJ going down the road experience it. I was no where near the thing and I was scared. If you've see how the front wheels on a shopping cart wobble back and forth really bad while pushing it, imagine that on both front tires at about 45.

Mine does it occasionally if I hit a bump on the highway over about 55mph. It doesn't scare me nearly as much as the first time it happened, and its fun to watch the cars around you scatter.
