I have a 95 2.5 L 4 cylinder jeep with a 5speed manual trans. I just started having some problems with starting it up, and it's been getting worse. Here is how it goes:
- put key in. Turn foward to 'on' but not cranking ignition. wait a while. then, you can hear the relay in the fuse box making a click click click sound and runs for a while (this has been running longer and longer over the past few days). I'm assuming this is what is telling the fuel pump to bring it up to pressure. Finally, it shuts off. Then the check engine light and shift-up lights come on, the seat belt and brake lights have been on since i turned the key to on. Then i can crank the ignition, while giving it gas and it starts. Then it sounds like its suffocating and you have to rev the engine to get it going good.
I was initially thinking this was the fuel pump, because it used to always start right away every time. But it never, ever sounds like its 'running out of gas' or anything like that while it goes down the road. It runs just fine after it starts up.
Then i was thinking maybe its an electrical problem, because the relay click click click noise doesnt come on right away when you turn it to 'on'. But its been getting worse. And it always comes on, it just takes a while. Wouldn't something electrical be more sparratic?
Or is it something else i haven't thought of? It has 130,000 miles which is generally when you might have to change a fuel pump... but it also has some electrical problem with the headlights (if you mess with the 'brights' at all, the regular headlights will flash on and off every 5 seconds as you drive down the road for a few days, then it will be fine after that unless you turn the brights on again)
Help! Thanks
