need to replace fuel tank skid plate on 1995

Help....I need to replace the fuel tank skid plate (20 gal tank) on my 95. The OEM is completely rusted through. I began to unbolt the original and quickly realized that it was actually holding the plastic tank up. I bolted it back up, fearing the tank coming down. Any tricks or ideas on how to remove the old rusted one and install the new one w/out the tank coming down. I also ordered new straps in that the old ones looked pretty rough.
Must say, the warrior replacement skid plate wasn't cheap....$180 with shipping.

No way to do the job without the tank coming down. You'll need a floor jack under the skid/tank and let it down a bit 'till you can reach in and disconnect the plug for the fuel pump & sender plus the evap and vent hoses. Disconnect the filler and it's vent line as well.

Fun! Fun! But not too bad a project.

Once you have it all down take a close look at the pump to tank gasket. It's a common leak point and as long as you have the whole mess down I'd replace it!

replacing straps is a good idea. I ordered my sending unit gasket from here Poly Performance Inc.*::*Fuel Cells &...inch, Walker E as whiteyj said, it's a decent idea to slap a new one in

The gasket was a recall item on certain year YJ's. I don't remember which years but I kknow the gasket on my 91 was replaced by the dealer years ago. Check with your local Jeep dealer to see if your year was on the recall list and if so was it replaced. If it is on the recall list and was not replaced you might get them to do the work for you since they will have to drop the tank to replace the gasket for the recall.

Where did you order it from? I need one. I need straps too I couldn't find straps on quadratec. I'll have to try 4wd.

Curious as to why the gas tank has to come down? Is there any way that I can slide the new skid plate in under a jack support holding it up?

mainly because of the straps holding the tank to the skid plate...IMO it will be more frustrating if you try and keep the gas tank up and replace the skid. Plus, while the tank is out, it's a good time to inspect it..etc
