I always had a dream of getting a Kargo rack when funds allow, and keeping my regular spare on the back and mounting a backup spare on top. I think it would look totally awesome. I think it's a good idea as long as it is secured well. post some pictures if you do this!

My personal preference is I care about my 50+ year old back too much to put a spare tire up top of my rack.

I didn't used to care when I was your age either...Now I wish I had listened to the old guys belly-aching. I expect a follow-up thread in 20-years to see if you feel different

I have the Kargo Master Congo rack on my XY; it is rated at 500-lbs. It will hold every bit of it, as I usually stand on it while I'm lashing down tons of camping gear including tables, stove, chairs, easy-up, etc.

Your COG will increases dramatically by putting the tire on top, which is never a good thing. Add to that you will need to pull every thing off of the rack in order to change a tire, and it is not what I chose to do. I bought the tire mount for the rack, but then stuck with the rear tire carrier. More camping gear on top and less trouble changing a tire...They both work for me.
