| OH MY GOD Engine Sludge!!
I checked my airbox today & found this in it. There was also a little bit on the very end of my dipstick & sorta smeared up the whole thing. What in the world is this, or what's causing it?? I know it has had a TINY amount of this sludge before, nothing near this much, and not that often. And i do/did have a TINY bit of oil blow-by into my airbox prior to this. But this is insane? I know for a fact that it is NOT a head gasket. Possibly moisture in the engine? I'm lost. The other day when i was driving the Jeep it was acting a little odd, seeming like it wanted to stall when coming to stops and ideling pretty low, the temp is also running kinda low on the temp gauge. Maybe about 125ish? compared to it's normal 210. HELP! Oh that junk that looks like it's floating in the airbox sludge is just like some rusty type thing, but it breaks up pretty easily when you run your hand across it. |

No it's milkyness. I checked the oil like 6 times. Out of the 6 times, the milkyness only showed up twice. It's kinda smeared up the dipstick a little too.

I had it at 2 garages. One was actually a Jeep dealership, they both said the head gasket is fine. That was my first though too, when they first garage told me it was fine, i decided to take it to an actual Jeep garage. Wouldn't it overheat if it was a head gasket rather then not get hot enough?

How bout you spend the 10 dollars on a compression tester or you could do a oil change and check that way.

I don't really know how to do any of that. Lol. I can only do basic things. And i literally just had my oil changed 4 days ago, i had a mysterious hole in my oil filter (how weird is that?) How do i do it when changing my oil? And what would a compression test tell me?

A blown head gasket does not mean that you will have a compresion issue every time. The gasket material can give way and make a channel from a coolant passage to an oil port and or where your oil drains back to the pan. You may also have a cracked head. You definatly have coolant or moisture in you crank case. Does it have a sweet smell? Pull the crank case hose off your air cleaner and see if you have steam. Mind you ..you will have some oil vapor, but you will know the differnce

No. It didn't really smell like antifreeze. I thought it smelled more like gas then anything? And i did remove the crankcase hose from the airbox, i started the jeep & it's blowing air out, if i plug it with my finger the pressure seems to build up. I do know that i have a little water dripping out of my exhaust. I also thought of a cracked block, but wouldn't it run horribly & lose all oil?

Water out the pipe is normal means that your emissions is working. Unless its steaming and smells like coolant.
The pressure you are feeling is normal. Every engine has crank case pressure. Now if it is puffing or pulsating pressure then there is a problem.
Change out your oil and check it again.
Just a thought... have you been running through the rain, mud puddles or pressure washed your engine lately?

if their was a hole in ur oil filter then i would think it would be just water that had gotten in their. but did the filter leak when it was on the jeep?
well any way if u want it cleaned out really god then take and put sea foam in the oil. just the recommended amount run it till it gets hot and change oil. should get anything out that's in the case and should clean the hell out of the inside of the motor.
do not run the motor with sea foam in the oil for long periods of time will do damage. as it thins the oil but for a short time its ok.

Yea it was leaking a ton of oil when there was a hole in the filter. Replaced filter, still leaking some oil but not as much. I'm not really sure what the problem is, when I drive it, it runs fine. Totally lost

Well, It will run totally fine until it stops... It's funny that just the bottom of your dip stick is destinctly milky looking with the rest looking great.. I would at least drain a quart of oil after letting it sit all night. Morning is good because the oil would have had some time to separate if it's contaminated with water and it should be thicker when it's cool. That's where I would start....

Everything that happens to this thing is funny. Lol. It seems like when I let it sit outside overnight and then drive it, it's worse. If it garaged it doesn't really seem to do it.

it's gotta be eiter a head gasket, cracked head or cracked block that doent happen for no reason. with that being the case or you at all mechanicly inclined? if not find someone you can trust who is and have them go trough it. i never trust shops, they just wanna make money off you they dont really care about your jeep like you do.

I'm not stupid, but I can't track this down that's for sure. I don't trust shop either. Someone told me it was moisture in the engine, and somewhere else told me it was the oil blow by problem getting worse (this is the same place that told me I have a weak cylinder) I have no idea what it is. I have an oil leak but I cant tell where it's coming from either. It's dripping onto the starter, then down on the passenger side leaf spring. I found a hole in the oil filter, replaced it. That helped alot, put I'm still getting quarter sized oil spots under it on the passenger side. I've known for a few months my oil pan leaks, but nothing to be concerned about. This oil is coming from something else, my starter is covered. As far as the airbox, I just redirected the hose, keep my oil checked and drive it. It isn't really using oil. So I dunno. Not sure how it's possible to leak oil but not use any??

was'nt calling you stoopid, and it sounds to me that your head or head gasket
is slowly going the way of the dodo. but it's like i said: it's got to be opened up and gone through. i wouldnt mind getting into it myself but im on the west coast. but i know how you feel it's something like this

If you arnt loosing oil how is radiator level? I would take it to a diffrent shop completely have them do the compression check. if nothing else works, before
you blow out those birthday candles wish for it to stop

Yea it's def frustrating. I parked it for a few days. Normal little drops
from oil leak. I just got done driving it. Runs amazing. Like I said, I got it 6 months ago and from time to time I'd see a little of that sludge, then it wouldn't do it for a while. It's so odd. I'm very frustrated. I guess if there's oil in it then just drive it? And I know you weren't calling me stupid. Also the antifreeze is perfect, bottle needed a little bit which I filled, and the radiator is full.

Oh and I had a jeep dealship do a compression test. They said my firing cylinder was showing some wear and that's why I had a little bit of blow by in my airbox, they also said it wasn't that bad and it will probably run like that for a while. And that's basically it just causes a little bit of a rough idle? No ideas. I'm just gonna check the oil and coolant level, keep it full and drive the damn thing.

if its having blow by issues, switch to a little heavier weight of oil on the next change.

Yep. That's what I'm gonna do. Just got back from like an hour drive in it. No problems at all. And I have been mixing a little Lucas with my oil when I do oil changes. The blow by was almost non-existant. And now I won't know since I took the hose outta the airbox.
