I noticed a small oil leak at the rear of the oil pan a while back. Its a Jeep, not a big deal... Turned into a big leak. I replaced the oil pan gasket with success, I thought, a few days ago. But, I still have an oil leak in the same spot. Anyone have any suggestions on what to do next?

Well I googled it and found steps on the internet, but doesnt seem hard.
Basics are drop the pan, and maybe an inspection plate behind motor,( cant remember now if thats on there or not.) loosen last cap on crank baring and pop out old seal and replace both uper and lower, Dont use this as directions just as an idea! I would search it. I know i found it and printed it out at home! good luck!

Are you sure its motor oil? Do you have an automatic trans? My YJ's automatic transmission needs a seal replaced and it leaks in the same area.

I'm going to try to get it done in the next couple weeks, before it gets any colder. I also have an axle seal leak so that should be fun to figure out too.

I have the same problem. From looking at it it looks like the oil pan plug is leaking but it is not. I guess i will try and replace the seal. Hopefully then my wife will let me park in the driveway again.

The other place to check is that it isn't leaking down the backside of the motor from the valve cover.

ok jeep girl here it goes, disconnect batt. put jeep on jack stands so the axle is fully drooped. remove starter. remove oil pan.remove rear main cap . in the cap is 1/2 of the seal. take out and replace with new. the other is in the block.get a small flat screwdriver and push it around the crank.put some grease on the new half and push it trough were the old one was. apply rtv to the area where the 2 seals will meet. put cap back on . tighten to 55lbs put new oil pan seal on and put back together.

After removing the rear main seal, inspect if the crankshaft has pit marks or ridge where the seal was making contact w/ the crankshaft. If you have either one or both then changing the rear main seal might just be a temporary remedy...
If you don't see any then put it back together and go have fun. |
