Squeaky serpentine bely

The belt on my 95 is squeaking, it appears to be in good shape but it is not super tight. How do i tighten it, making sure not do do any damage to anything?

look under your power steering pump. there is a 1/2" bolt that is for belt tension. loosen pump slightly and adjust tension. retighten pump.

How tight should the belt be?

not sure. there in a tension tester folks have been talking about. i tightened mine just till the squeeling stopped. too tight will put too much load on pulleys and affect them negatively.

I have a similar problem, but it's the idler bearing. I hope. If not, it's the alternator, and that's no fun.

as far as how tight it should be, a general rule of thumb ive always been told is that the belt should have a small amount of play in it, like an inch of up and down movement.

Where is the idler bearing? is it in the pulley above the alternator?

I just had the whole sqeeky noise issue and it turned out to be the lower idler pulley sqeeking right before the bearing froze and snapped my serpentine belt. On the Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.0 6 cyl. engine there are two idler pulleys. One above and one below to the right of the altenator. Once the belt was off I checked all the pulleys to make sure they moved smoothly without noise. Since the upper idler pulley made some light noise I ended up just replacing both for about $22 ea. The new belt was $30. So, after a little work all is good!
