So here is a new one for all of you. 1990 YJ 4.2, 4" lift, transfer case drop, running 33's.
I have this grinding/rubbing/squeel sound every once in a while. Can't tell where it is coming even with doors and top off. Sounds like it is coming from the left rear wheel. Now this is the part that really bugs me, it happens if I get a bump from the right side, even when going straight and the latest was when I backed up on a hill and turned the wheels to the right.
I checked the play on the rear axles (thinking maybe moving outward and cocking on the brake shoes) Nope very little almost none at all.
Checked brakes and rolled them up actually about 10 clicks.
Parking break does not seem to be hanging up.
Front bearings are tight and have no movement.
I have your typical creeking( bushings) but this happens at highway speeds even as low as 5 mph.
It actually sounds like the brakes almost like they are rubbing in the drum. It does not go away when I apply the brakes. It goes away on its own right after the loud squeel.
Any ideas would be great.

Jack the assend up and put on stands. Crank the jeep and put in gear. 1st will work. Now get out and listen. See if you can stop the rear using normal brakes. If not you may have a plugged line or crimped line. Those springs and plates in the drum assembly will make all kinds of noises. If the brakes worked normal and If the noise is there take the drum off then reinstall the wheels. See if it goes away. If not you got a axle bearing going out.

Did that before. Jacked it up, all working correctly. I was guessing on the bearing also but there is not a clicking noise/feel, leaking seal but I did notice that the axle on the driverside does have an abs tone ring on it so obviously not stock. I have even had friends following me and said all appears to be tracking correctly.
I may open the rear end and give it a quick check.

When jacked up did you run the engine with it in gear? Makes a lot of difference than just spinning by hand.

Yes did that. Also had it on a dyno. It does not happen all the time. Can't seem to catch it when I'm looking for it.
