Do you need side mirrors in Missouri?

I'm taking the doors off and trying to decide if I need to get new mirrors or relocate the factory one's. I know some states require it by law. Does Missouri?

Depends on the year of the vehicle: MIRRORS — If your vehicle was made after 1967, it must have an inside and an outside rearview mirror.

when i looked up the law it only says one rearview mirror. i have been passign cops for a few months now with no trouble with no doors or mirrors. jus the one rearview in the windsheld. they usually wave most of the time.

It depends on the cop rly. How I understand / have been told by multiple people, you are only required to have a driver side mirror. Some early 90's vehicles were only made with 1 mirror (driver side). I dont think the "rearview" on the windshield counts as the 1 required mirror. My salesman even warned me that it was against the law in MO to drive w/o mirrors.

But i see it kinda like the bumper height law, they wont bother you about it, unless its that time of the month...

all Missouri statutes are posted online, I'll have to check it out to be sure.

From Department of Revanue http://dor.mo.gov/forms/Driver_Guide_Chapter14.pdf

does not specify what side it must be on, but does require one outside mirror.

Incorrect. I have police wave at me when I have no outside mirrors.

Doesn't mean it's not against the law, alot of things are done with police watching.

Most cops have no idea what the laws are. Police Acadamey is kinda like community college, they teach you just enough to get by on. I've seen a cop argue with a woman for over an hour ( not knowing she was a lawyer ) and clearly showed he had no idea what the laws for his juristiction are.

I know in Florida you are required to have at lease the rear view mirror and one side mirror. I put on all 3 just in case.

To put this topic to bed, in Missouri....regardless of year, you must have (mirror providing view of rear). Now for those dense types, that means of the 3 you should have, you only legally need one.

I am a county police officer, also a jeeper. So maybe the next time a cop drives by your illegal rig. News flash, he prolly doesn't give a crap!

Lol this is great! He's got the right answer.. I was in my friends jeep one time and the officer asked him if it was legal to drive without doors.. Yeah the cop asked him! And the officer never said anything about the missing mirrors. Bottom line just go for it and except it if you end up with a little fine.

Criminal law v. Administrative Law

The criminal/traffic code in MO only requires ONE mirror.

The Motor Vehicle Inspection Act, an administrative statute, requires side mirrors if so equipped by the the original manufacturer. There is no criminal sanction for violating this statute. The inspector will just not pass your vehicle.

And yes, lawyers do know the law and how to interpret it. Especially those of us who were prosecutors for 8 yrs. I ride w/o side mirrors but put my doors/mirrors on when I have the jeep inspected.

Again, nobody cares about some administrative broccoli act... Has nothing to do with riding down the road legally. (Get your inspection and take your doors of and enjoy) cheers!

directly from the inspection manual

Mirrors (11 CSR 50-2.220) All motor vehicles which are so constructed or loaded that the operator cannot see the road behind by looking back or around the side of the vehicle shall be equipped with either an inside or outside mirror, or both, that will reveal the road behind. All motor vehicles which were equipped by the manufacturer with an inside mirror and all 1968 and later model vehicles manufactured with both an inside and a driver's side outside mirror, shall be equipped in like manner. Do not inspect passenger side outside mirrors. Reject vehicle if:  Forward vision is unsafely obstructed by mirror assembly  Mirror does not provide a clear view of highway to rear because of cracks, discoloration or improper mounting  Mirror is broken or has sharp edges exposed  Mirror is very difficult to adjust or will not maintain a set adjustment  There is no required mirror

Clarification

bcarinder02 That is administrative statute I mentioned that has no criminal penalty associated with it. As such an officer cannot, or should not, stop you for violating it. Just make sure you have side mirrors on when you take it to get it inspected for plates.

As to Rob1980: You nor anyone else fully answered the question because it left off the fact that your jeep cannot pass inspection if it doesn't have side mirrors. The original poster did not state whether he was temporarily removing the doors or was making a permanent change. His question was not simply "Do I need to have side mirrors to drive down the road?" His question was, "Do you need side mirrors in Missouri." The answer is yes to pass an inspection that has to take place every one or two years, but no to drive down the road. An answer that had not been previously spelled out in this thread.

Regardless, thanks for your service. Happy jeeping.
