Anyone know if its legal/illegal to have a chain wrapped around my front bumper in the state of Michigan , say maybe a figure 8 look? Not only would I like easy access to it but I think it would look cool!! Any input would be greatly appreciated..
Pulling stuck people out ? I have a short tow strap. ( putting a strap on a car will reduce damage) chain on mine strap on theirs, making it longer. Why waste money on another tow strap when I have a chain. Do you know if its legal?
Not illegal to have chains on your bumper that I know of.
However, you should not use chains for towing or recovery.
Do not use tow straps that have hooks on them either.
Recovery straps are designed to stretch and build up kinetic energy which in turn helps pull out a stuck vehicle. Get all the energy into a strap with hooks and when the hook breaks, you have a projectile coming at you or the other vehicle. People get killed. Chains are even worse. Same reasoning a lot of people are moving towards synthetic winch line.
Check into a GLFWDA course on Offroad Recovery. A lot of good information is presented.

The chain thing is just a stupid fad. Under no circumstances should they be used for recovery. Especially since you're primarily concerned with looks you probably have some cheap china junk chain that'll kill someone.
I have seen a few jeeps run around with straps wrapped around front bumper, looks ok. Seems lazy to me but I do agree 100% that chains should never be used. Save that chain for logging not towing
