I would really like to make a trip up to Drummond Island this spring/summer. I never been up there and I really want to go. I have no one to go with me and figured it would be best to have at least one other vehicle. I can't go during Memorial Weekend or around 4th of July, but I could pretty much make any other weekend work. I'd also be willing to take a few days of work for a long weekend.
There are a bunch of people going up for the "JEEP the Mac" event on the weekend of April 22nd. I will be up there that weekend. We are planning to do the State Trails on Drummond Island on Friday and the Turtle Ridge Off-Road park on Saturday.
I'm over in Newberry and hoping to head over sometime this summer. I'm only in the U.P about every other weekend, so if you're coming and know in advance, shoot me a pm and I'll see if I can get there. I'm in an un-lifted JK with just a set of 285/70r17's so I might need to take the easier trails.
The wife, kid & I go every year during the first weekend in October. That's their annual fall fest (Oktoberfest) and between the fall colors & the pub crawl it's the best time to go. We usually get a few other jeepers together but We've done it solo too. If you're smart & get the local conditions & trail maps beforehand (& have the right recovery gear) you'll be fine. There are always plenty of jeepers out there to lend a hand spotting etc.

Making reservations up there July 16, 17, 18. I'm in the same boat as you. Would love to hit the good trails but not alone. Booking at the trailhead campground. Check it out if you're interested.
We are from IL heading to Drummond Island June 16th-19th for the Jeep Jamboree. Then staying in Manistee area for a few days. Looking for info about trails near Manistee. The webpages are VERY confusing if you don't know the area. I have email 2x for paper maps. No one responds. Any of you guys local want o help us out?
We are planning a vacation to the Manistee area next month. We are travelling with 2 jeeps, and are looking to take some trails. I have been all over your website, and I have having a hard time figuring out some details:
1. Which trails are OK for jeeps?
2. Are kids under 16 years old allowed to drive off-road in a Jeep after taking the online safety course, or is that only for ATV or bikes?
3. Do you have paper maps?
Any other information you think is pertinent would be helpful as well.
Here's a link to all of the public trails. You'll need an ORV and ORV Trail sticker to be legal which you can pick up at Meijer or other outdoor/sporting stores. Maps
You'll have to print or download them to your phone.
1) When looking at the maps, anything marked as ORV Route will be acceptable for a Jeep. ORV Trails will be too small for a Jeep.
2) Not sure on that rule.
3) This club used to send out a book of maps to its members. I'm not sure if that is still the case or not. They also have good info though on their website. The Cycle Conservation Club of Michigan
I just got back from a trip to Drummond Island last weekend. It was the most intense four wheeling I have ever done. All of the trails had water and mud and some are very remote. I was in some spots that I was not sure I could get through but I never got stuck. I am amazed at how good the Jeep did. One thing that helps is the ground is pretty rocky so it is a firm base. My JK is not lifted but I do have 285 tires. If you are ever on the island Johnson's Sport Shop is a great place to go for supplies.
Wheels, glad to hear you enjoyed it. Our trip in July was awesome. Plan is to head back up there in April for Jeep the Mac 2017. You should join if you want to get back to the island.
I'm planning to go to Jeep the Mac this year then over to Drummond for the following week. Drummond was a blast last year. I hoping it's not too cold in April though.
