Gas Smell in Jeep

Hi All, I am brand new to this site but have had my jeep since '97. I have a 97 Jeep Wrangler 4 Cylinder. Just in the past couple of weeks I have been getting less then 10 miles to the gallon & it smells like gas in the jeep. Just wondering if anyone has had any problems like this & what they did. I cant figure out why such low gas mileage.

I would appreciate any help.

I'd start by checking for a gas leak in your fuel line or fuel tank.

I had this happen too. Start by tracing the fuel line from the tank to the engine looking for any leaks. More likely, your fuel pump seal has popped off the gas tank. Mine smelled like someone left a gas can open in the backseat.

Unfortunately, there isn't a hatch under the backseat for access. You'll need to drop the tank to inspect. Smart to wait until you're low on fuel (ask me how I know). Put a piece of plywood on your floorjack to support the tank. Undo the 4 bolts holding it on and lower to the ground. You'll see if the top is popped off. I didn't need any special parts to fix, but I believe the seal can possibly be broken and need replacing? Good luck- you'll enjoy the fresh air smell afterward.
