Oakland County

Hello, newer Wrangler owner with a TJ. Looking for trails in the Oakland County area (I live in Lake Orion). Anyone have trails in the area they like to ride?

I don't believe that there are any legal wheeling areas left in Oakland County, unless you find someone with private land that they will let you use. The closest place to you would be The Mounds in Grand Blanc. Welcome to the site!

+1. Wheeling and suburbia don't really go together so well.

I'll have to check out the Mounds. I've heard good things about it from several people now. On a side note, heading to Gaylord for the weekend and am hoping to find some logging trails up there!

Hello!

Just picked up my first Jeep Wrangler Unlimited this week.

What types of trails are at the Mounds? Would like to hear if you also found any luck in Gaylord, as the family cottage is in Waters.

I had lots of luck in Gaylord (our cottage is just outside Waters on Emerald Lake). There are miles and miles of trails leading all over, Gaylord t Grayling to Johanasburg (sp). I'm sure there are places to jump on all over, but the two places I located were:

Ranger Lake Road (off McCoy Road), you can get on right where the big power lines come across Ranger Lake, or:

Turtle Lake Road, East of McCoy Road. Some of the trails may be called the North Branch Trails. We had a great time on them this weekend.

I go to the mounds outside of Mt. Morris, not to far away and a heck of a lot to do there. You'll need an up to date ORV sticker and its like $11 a day for non-residents of Genesee County. (Im up in Tuscola County...)

Mounds in Mt. Morris. Fun spot. I'm in Davison so it's right around the corner. Other then that I have no clue. Been looking for someplace with some nice trails.

I'm in Oxford. Me and" seven services" have been out one to the mounds together. We also went on a trail ride in st Helen just recently. There are a bazillion trail up there. Check out the clubs site for pics of the rides we've been on( thumbjeeps.com). We are headed up to montrose Saturday for a benifit mud bog. Hit me up with your number and maybe we could meet up sometime for some wrenching or a ride up north. Always looking for someone to head up with

There you go. MI ORV maps, downloadable in PDF format, with links to GPS data (.gpx files). But, as already stated, nothing legal near south Oakland County.

Fox Lake rd. in hadley there's trails and very ruff roads make sure you have an orv sticker and you can find some trails. But dont go in the area with the green gate... don't get stuck in the pond especially it makes it real easy to get a ticket. Also there's another not so legal spot sw corner of dixe hwy and 75 you can see the two track up the hill people have been going there for year's.

Hate to burst your bubble Mattsn002, but there is no place in Oakland County where you need an ORV sticker, or are protected by having one on your vehicle. Fox Lake Rd is part of the State Recreation Area - there are no 4wd trails in that area. Only some county seasonal roads and the roads through the recreation area. And the spot you are referring to at Dixie and I75 is private property. Without the written permission of the landowner, you are tresspassing. if you go where everyone else has been going for years.

After looking at the map linked above I see your right. So other than the mounds there's nothing close by ?

Gladwin is the closest state land, buy if you are going that far you might as well go to St Helen. Or Rocks & Valleys in Harrison.

I'm thinking about going to the Mounds tomorrow, 1st time there 1st time off road. Anyone else going to be there? Is there some place close to the entrance I can get an ORV sticker? Do I need a flag?

You don't need a flag, but will need an ORV. I don't think there's anywhere nearby that does, but could be wrong. Meijer, Dunham's, etc sell them. Usually places that sell fishing licenses (also DNR) do, but not always. Make sure you have front and rear tow points and a loop ended strap (never ever a metal hook ended strap for vehicle recovery). A CB is a real good idea as well.

Just got back from the Mounds. Christened the Jeep with mud. Went everywhere my pucker factor would allow, the Jeep had no problem with any of it. I got my ORV sticker at the Meijers on Lapeer Road north of Oxford. They sold tow straps there and I had to buy a pocket knife for the Jeep to open the tow strap packaging as well as cutting the Instructions off the ORV sticker. I'm slowly picking up a tool bag for the Jeep.

Let me know if weekdays or weekends are better. I'm retired so time can be flexible. More people would be more fun.
