Passing through...any trails nearby?

Will be passing through Port Huron on our way to pick up the kids Sault Ste. Marie today and then back again tomorrow. Just wondering if there are any trails or anything we could check out on the way.

We will be taking HWY 69 and 75 I believe so let me know if there is anything around not too far out of the way.

Thanks

There is a nice selection of trails right off of I75 at St Helen - exit 222 I think. Take M76 north a couple of miles to "downtown" St Helen, then take a right at the only stop light in town (Airport Rd). A couple of miles east will bring you to the St Helen Scramble Area.

Alternately, getting off at the same exit but heading back under the freeway a couple hundred yards will bring you to Old M55. A left will take you east towards West Branch. All along both sides of the highway are legal 2 tracks. If you continue east to Dunham Lake Rd and head south there are several miles of scenic ORV Routes that form a loop that cross Dunham Lake a couple times.

Have fun!

We checked out the second place you on our way up yesterday. On the left hand side where the parking lot is there was a ton of ATV's racing theough the trails so we didn't go in there.

A little further down the road there was an entrance on the right hand side...we went in there but didn't go very far as I'm not sure if its all supposed to be ATV trails and didn't want to get in any kind of trouble...lol

I think we'll stop on our way back through today and check it out again...is it alright to take the jeep through those trails?

Thanks

If it is marked as an ORV trail, you can only be there if it also meets the definition of a 2wd forest road. Safe bet is to skip it. A mile or so east of the M76/old M55 intersection is Dunham Lake Red. Head south a mile or so and the route crosses the road. It runs a complete loop so you will come back to your starting point. If you head over to the DNR website and pull up a map of the trails, there us also a loop over near Emery Rd that is tougher to explain how to get to but also worth taking a look at.
