The signs were all over the place. At the entrance to each of the roads we were on. Chris was the event planner and can give you specifics.

Sand Rd., Heading out of Caseville Konkey Rd. and Sand Rd. Split. Head east, about 1m past the houses is one when entering the two tracks. Then, a little ways out closer to Oak Beach is another one in-between maintained parts and non-maintained parts of Sand Rd.

Curious, what's Sand Road like in the winter? As you said, for this tour Sand Road is just a two track thru the woods right now.

its nice, awesome after a snow storm or ice storm. Tire tracks will pack it, but its not regularly plowed. Some areas are, but not the unimproved parts...

So is it basically a county seasonal road, township road...? I have not done any exploring in the thumb, and that is not a sign we typically see on state forest roads or county seasonal roads up north.

Not for sure? I know they run through State Land. Do a search on Google Maps for Rush Lake near Caseville MI. Thats where we went back to about 1/2 way through the trip in the woods.

heres a pic... https://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&s...-8&sa=N&tab=wl

I used to squirrel hunt back there all the time w/my Dad. Years ago they didn't have all the side trails and challenges blocked off like the do now.

Trip Log (follow along google if you wish to see the route)

Out of Caseville,
Head down the street behind dairy queen (state st.) out of caseville
turns into Sand Rd.
turn left onto Sand Rd. where it becomes Konkey Rd.
Travel Sand Rd. Across State Park Rd. Becomes Old Sand Rd.
Before Quarry Rd, break right and head back to Rush Lake. Circle around, head back out past where you came in.
Turn right onto Sand Rd. off from Quarry Rd.
Follow Sand Rd. across Oak Beach Rd., instead of the jog stay on Weaver Rd.
Run weaker rd until it comes out at M25
Turn right, follow M25 1 mile and turn right onto Port Cresent
1/2 mile down Port Cresent turn left onto Sand Rd.
Follow into downtown Port Austin.
Circle around at lighthouse marina for a short break.
Continue west on M25 6 miles to Fireside Inn
After break, continue along water line back to Caseville (along Lake Huron)

All together, we left Caseville at 1:30pm
Arrived back in Caseville at 5:30pm

Included about 1.5hrs at the Fireside Inn, a stop at Rush Lake and a stop at the Port Austin Marina.

Considering a slightly different route next year. We will include the same roads with a visit to Rush Lake however I want to start earlier in the day and also run further east to visit Grindstone and some of that area as well. It would make the entire event run about 6 hours instead of 4.

Taking opinions on a 4hr trip -vs- 6hr (including stops and a meal of course)

Not that I have a vote, but, that makes it an 11 hour trip for me. I'd have to think about that.
