Hello Mainers! How are the winters?

Hi folks!

I'll be moving up to Maine from Columbus, OH in exactly one month from today. I bought my 13' JK Sport this past March and I am looking forward to trekking through the snows up North. Tell me about the winters in Southern Maine. I'll be living in North Waterboro (Lake Arrowhead) and commuting to either Portland, and surrounding suburbs, or to Portsmouth, NH depending on where I land a job.

I've seen similar questions concerning Columbus on local forums and the responses surprise me. Some folks claim you need studded tires or chains, others say you'll be fine regardless of what vehicle and tire you're running. I side with the latter opinion.

Do I need anything special in the way of tires, read Duratracs, for daily commuting during the harshest months? Also, what do you typically keep in your Jeep during the winter? I'm thinking shovel, salt, tow strap, and a blanket in addition to a basic tool kit, flashlight, and cell phone.
