Beach Permits?

Hey guys,

I'm looking forward to a nice NE summer with my Jeep and I was wondering if anyone knew the specifics on beach/off-road permits. The previous owner had a couple 7-day permits on the vehicle but I'm not sure where that is good for and how the whole thing works. Ideally I would like to be able to drive on the beaches as I spend a lot of time up on the north shore. Does anyone know if/ how I can ride on city beaches without just shutting off my lights and hoping for the best Any info on this subject would be awesome.

Thanks!

Adam

It's been a while, but I thought they had access in Truro beach on the Cape. Call the state parks office.

I have done a little research on the topic.

here is a link to the Cape Cod Beach - probably where the existing 7 day stickers are from
Cape Cod National Seashore - Cape Cod National Seashore Oversand Beach Driving (U.S. National Park Service)

Duxbury also sells beach permits to non-residents
Duxbury, MA - 2010 Non-Resident Beach Permits Application

let me know if you find anything closer to Boston.

I was thinking of getting a Duxbury sticker - I think I would get more use out of it since its only about 45 min away.

Have you purchased Race Point stickers in the past? Do they sell out? Thought I might go for the 7 day pass if I make it out there this summer.

2 years ago I got the race point sticker, its $150, the only thing that kind of sucks is the rules and regs are out of control, I can understand why, its a national seashore and everything but last year and this year Im getting the orleans/chatham sticker for Nauset. its $180 but WAYYYY better. You get on at Nauset Beach in Orleans ad go south through the dunes there for miles and at anytime you can just go left, hop over a dune and be in the beach and drive on the beach there. I went to Nauset today here are some pics.. and as much as i like driving on the beach, I actually like getting there and rallying through the dunes way better. Nauset is actually FREE until sometime in may when they start checking stickers so it might be worth the trip to check it out and see if its something you might want to do. Im not knocking the National Seashore one, but its pretty far up there, I live in Harwich in the summer, and Nauset is 10 minutes from me as opposed to going up to Truro, 35 minutes away.

I heard that Duxbury is very Pricey for out of towners. I might make a trip to the Orleans beach that looks like fun. Anyone have pics of Race Point, Im not familiar with that area!

I dont have any pics of Race Point but its really nice. Its just beaches though, NPS wont let you drive in the dunes, its pretty much a paved trail to the beach, but once youre on the beach its fun. For what it is I think its easier to go to Orleans, Its WAY closer, the surfing is better, the fisihing is better, and Im a fan of crawling through the miles of dunes to get to the beach, thats the best part.

DELUXbury is pricey in general but I know the Harwich resident sticker is $15, but for non residents for the season its $300, Glad I'm a seasonal resident!

bfoley: Thanks for all the picts and tips. Now I'm leaning towards Nauset Beach. I actually called the Beach Office today and talked with a live person. They said the permits go on sale May 1st. They are doing renewals only by mail. She did say that last year the Beach was closed to vehicle for 55 days (May 22 - to July 15th) due to nesting birds. Prices will be the same as last year $180 for non-residents.

Thats the impression I was under as far as prices and dates. Granted its $30 more for the Nauset one, but I like the atmosphere better, All the dunes, trails, and abandoned beach shacks add to it all, you dont even feel like youre at the cape. They town of orleans actually has a video that has footage of the beaches and dunes, its an informational video but it shows exactly what it looks like, let me see if I can dig it up. As far as those piping plovers its a crapshoot at either the national seashore beaches or nauset. I can understand the protection of endangered species but IMO its getting a little out of hand. They're now looking to poison crows that prey on small plovers. So kill a bird to save another bird? I dont know, but it would really stink to have them shut parts down, they wont shut it all down though there will still be parts.

And like I said before, Its totally free until sometime in May when they check permits, I forget what the sign said. So it could be worth the ride down there. Also the air filling station isn't open yet, so just be prepared for it if you don't have on board air and have to drive a few miles at scary low PSI to the Hess station (FREE air by the way).

Nauset Beach Picts

I decided to get the Nauset Beach sticker. I've been down there twice already and its a ton of fun. Driving down the back trails is just as much fun as the chilling on the beach. Ran 13 psi the first time, 20 psi this time - couldn't tell a difference.

I took a couple out of town friends down there on Friday and here are some picts

Fellow MA-er here and playing catch up. Looks like awesome fun. Does the beach close to Jeeps at a certain time of the year? Yipes those 7-days are expensive compared to the annual!

Each year, the beach closes when the nesting shore birds start to hatch - In this case, the protected piping plover. The trails are closed to vehicles until the chicks can fly, usually 25 days from hatching. This year the beach was closed from June 1st to August 9th. (69 days) last year it was closed for only 55 days.

Nauset beach only sells annual passes for $180. I bought a 7 day sticker for Race Point Beach ($50) over 4th of July week since Nauset was closed. This was a fun beach too and since it is so long, its rare that then entire beach is closed.

Next year I might get an Duxbury sticker, its $275 for nonresidents, but its so much closer that I think I would use it more.

I have been looking into getting one for Sandy Neck. My GF's mom has a place in Barnstable, so it is a close drive from there, where I will be staying on the weekends. I am already making the drive from Boston, so SandyNeck is far enough as it is.
