top of the world westfield

okay guys and girls, i live in western ma and the shop i work for is in westfield. every day i drive past a great view of east mountain, and heading up westfield Rd. going to holyoke, there is a trail that ALWAYS has tire tracks on it and coming out of the trail. the name that people call the spot is THE TOP OF THE WORLD and i want to know how hard it is to get there in a jeep. i know people ride this trail a lot and any info will help. what size lift, tires, accessories needed, etc... right now i have an 08 wrangler x, stock hight and 30' tires. im planning on getting a 2.5 or 3" lift soon and im really itching to go on this trail in the summer/spring. my brother went in there in a f150 with 35's and a 2" lift(and got stuck on a tree) and are there any easy/moderate trails around this area?? thanks everyone!!!!

I know exactly what your talking about. I have never been there myself but a good friend of mine goes there a lot with his stock truck (don't know what it is) and his brothers Cherokee. No problem. And he has invited me to go with him up there I just haven't gotten a chance. I have a pretty much stock jeep and all he said was that bigger tires would help but I could still do it stock. I hope this helps.

i think its no trespassing up there. i have not been up there in years. the original entrance is where the driveway is. i think there is one house up there now. at one time there was a deep swamp near the top. if you do go give a report on it.

Great place to off-road, not much of a lift needed, some trails that follow the same road are deeper than the other. If you go alone your gonna need a spotter, but it's rock climbing to the top part for the view. And your gonna need power not a 4 banger.

okay so i just hiked up here not too long ago and from where i parked my jeep (about 100 feet from the road) to the top is about 1 mile. it took me about 20-30 minutes to hike but i was also going pretty quick because the sun was going down. there are some rougher trails more towards the top but still can be done in a stock jeep or truck with a spotter. i plan on going up here with a couple friends and with a budy who's got a quad soon too. hopefully that helps

Top of the world is on private land and the DEP has been patrolling it a lot this year.
Easiest way to have your rig taken away from you is to wheel illegally.

if there's a sign saying no trespassing your right. it used to be the old paintball field and hiking spot. people off-road it all the time.

Update - No signage...

I too drive by this trail everyday and have taken my adventure bike up there, but not my jeep. It was a little too hairy for my bike, so I turned around as I was alone.

As of this morning, there are no signs posted, only "No dumping" a little ways into the trail.

I would like to meet up with folks if anyone would like to ride it.

Very nice of you to go there personally and research for the rest of us. I'd like to hike it myself, and just like you, then decide if I want to try it with the Jeep.

Whereabouts is this? When I look up 700 Westfield Road Holyoke MA, I see there's what appears to be a house very deep in the woods with a long driveway, and nearby I see Fini's Ice Cream (which I also plan to check out)! But I can't quite figure out where you'd get on the trail.

second trail and trespassing or not?

so i have heard that there is an entrance for "the top of the world" off of east mountain road. Has anyone else heard of this or another trail off of east mountain? This one apparently off east mountain is private property and also heavily watched.

Where as the one off of westfield road (just before the guard rail on the right when heading into holyoke) does not have no trespassing signs anywhere. there is one "no dumping" sign but thats it. although it is right next to the reservoir that is heavily patrolled.

has anyone had any trespassing issues with the westfield road entrance?when i went there to help my friend out of the mud, i was parked with my jeep and another truck on the side of the road and a cop stopped thinking we were in an accident. we told him we were about to help a friend and he never told us it was restricted and then watched us drive in and left. granted he was not the environmental police but i still would have thought he'd tell us if we werent supposed to be in there. (if he knew)

anyway, until there are "no tresspassing" signs posted i would say it is safe to go in. it is one of the heaviest used trails in westfield and if there was a problem with using it then i feel something would have been done about it before now.

charamut20 thanks for the update. I looked on Google Street View and I see the entrance you're talking about now.

You'd put Fini's Ice Cream on your right, continue east toward Holyoke. Soon, the road adds a second eastbound lane. You'd want to drive slow in the right lane, and as you said, just before the guardrail there's a faint dirt road off to the right. Looks like it splits off two ways as soon as you get into the woods.

If I zoom in, I do see what looks like a small sign attached to a tree. Impossible to read from the images.

Kind of unrelated, but in that area on Google Street View is a two-tone gray/silver Wrangler. Makes ya wonder if the driver of that Jeep even knows what's hiding just off to the right?

you can see the trail split at the entrance and then meet back up a little ways down. the yellow sign you saw was the "no dumping" sign.

can get muddy

this was my friend getting stuck bad on Easter a year ago up there. only about 2 minutes after getting in the entrance.

he went there with 3 other people in the one vehicle and some how was able to get all four wheels off the ground there was so much mud snowplowed under his skid plate. they spent hours trying to dig it out into the dark. i was able to come out and help the next morning.

after some good rain the trail gets really muddy and fun but definitely go with a friend. winches, come-alongs, and high lifts are a huge help.

but most of the parts that get muddy have a second trail to either side so you can go around.
